Introduction to Teaching with Media and Technology

EDT 300, 3 semester hours

Prerequisites - None.

Course Description - EDT 300, Introduction to Teaching with Media and Technologyis designed to introduce students to knowledge and skills in a variety of information and electronic technology applications used in education. Strong emphases are given to the basic use of the latest technologies and to the use of these technologies to access available resources on and beyond UAB campus. The course is introductory in nature and in expectation.

Course Objectives - Upon completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  1. Understand basic computer and information technology terminology.
  1. Use microcomputer productivity tools such as word processors, databases, spreadsheets, graphics, and electronic presentations.
  1. Use computer systems to access on-line database information on campus (e.g., perform searches in Mervyn Stern Library and Lister Hill Library).
  1. Use computer networks to search local, national, and international databases.
  1. Communicate via electronic mail and participate in group discussions.
  1. Use multimedia and network systems, optical technology and data storage devices (e.g., CD ROM, scanner, digital camera, zip drive, etc.).
  1. Describe the basic components and functions of computer hardware.
  1. List and describe various kinds of computer software programs and their applications in instructional settings.

Course Content – Class instruction and hands-on practices on skill development are essential to this class. Readings, videotapes, and class activities will be utilized in instruction and to facilitate student comprehension of the course content. All activities will focus on developing student competence of using technology in education and advancing their understanding of the role of technology in education.

Online database and networking: UAB network and resources/Scotty/External resources/Internet/WWW;

Basic computer and information technology terminology

  1. Historical development of computer technology;

Computer hardware concepts;

Multimedia systems, components, and applications;

Network concepts

  1. Microcomputer productivity tools: Word Processing (MS Word)
  1. Microcomputer productivity tools: Spreadsheets (MS Excel)
  1. Multimedia and optical technology: data storage devices, Digital camera, scanner, CD-ROM, and zip drives
  1. New directions of computer-assisted instruction: interactive learning and hypermedia; graphics, electronic presentation (Power Point), and Web pages
  1. Evaluation and selection of media and materials for instruction
  1. Project presentations; course reflection
