INTRAMURAL DODGEBALL

The Intramural Program staff will work hard to ensure that all participants have the safest experience, but guaranteeing absolute safety is not possible. Be aware that participation in intramural sports activities, including use of intramural facilities and equipment, is completely voluntary. There are risks and hazards, minor and serious, associated with participation in intramural sports activities. Participants voluntarily assume all responsibility and risk of loss, damage, illness, and/or injury to person or property associated with participation in intramural sport activities.

University at Albany, the State University of New York and the State of New York are not liable for any injuries, damages or other losses which individuals may incur while using recreational sports facilities or participating in the Intramural Program provided by the Office of Campus Recreation. The University at Albany does not provide medical, health, or other insurance for participants. Medical expenses incurred such as ambulance, doctor bills and x-rays will be the responsibility of the participant. Purchasing adequate health/medical insurance prior to participation is strongly recommended.

I. Player Eligibility

  1. All undergraduate & graduate students who have paid the recreation fee and are currently enrolled in any department or college of the University and current faculty and staff members shall be eligible to enjoy all intramural privileges and shall retain that status until they withdraw, graduate, take a leave of absence, or fail to comply with the eligibility rules or other guidelines.
  2. Only players who are able to present their current UAlbany photo ID card to the Intramural Site Supervisor will be eligible to participate in intramural activities. There will be no exceptions to this rule.

II. Team Composition

  1. Six (6) players constitute a team. A team must have at least 5 players by the time the game is scheduled to begin.
  2. All players on a team must be registered to the team’s roster through IMLeagues.com prior to the first regular season game. Team members may not be added after the first game.
  3. All team members are required to present their UAlbany photo ID card and sign in with the Intramural Site Supervisor at the beginning of each game. If a team member does not have his/her ID card or does not sign in with the Intramural Site Supervisor they will not be eligible to play.
  4. Co-rec teams are encourages to be made of an equal number of male and female team members.

III. Playing Field and Equipment

  1. Intramural participants will be expected to keep all used fields in pristine condition. Before leaving intramural facilities participants will be required to throw away all garbage and collect all items such as clothing, personal equipment, etc. If any garbage or other items are left behind, both team’s sportsmanship ratings will be reduced by one half point.
  2. Intramural Dodgeball games will be played in the Basketball Gym Courts. The playing area will be outlined by cones.
  3. All game balls(5) will be provided by the Office of Campus Recreation.
  4. Matching Team Jerseys/Shirts required. If teams do not have matching uniforms, colored pinnies will be provided by the Office of Campus Recreation.
  5. NO JEWLERY MAY BE WORN DURING GAMES. Captains are responsible for ensuring that all team members remove jewelry before play. This includes, but is not limited to, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, watches, facial rings, etc. Medical and religious jewelry may be worn but must be completely covered and taped to the body.
  6. Under no circumstances will a player wearing a cast or a splint be permitted to play. Braces with exposed metal must be covered.
  7. The Intramural Site Supervisor will have the final say on the legality of all equipment.

IV. Game Times

  1. Games will begin at the time scheduled. Five minutes (5) grace period will be allowed after the start of the game for players to arrive. Teams must have at least 5 players at the end of this grace period or it will be counted as a forfeit. The team that forfeits a game will also receive a Sportsmanship Rating of “0”. No exceptions.
  2. Matches will be decided using the best of 7 format. The first team to win 4 games will be declared the winner of the match.
  3. There is a 5-minute time limit for each game.
  4. Games not finished in the allotted time will be decided by a head count. If there is a tie, then that game is considered a tie.
  5. If the match ends in a tie then a Sudden Death overtime period will be played. In overtime the first team to legally eliminate a player will be declared the winner.

E. Each team is allowed one 60 second time-out per match, not game.

F.Substitutions can only be made between games or during time outs.

V. Game Play

  1. Five (5) balls issued by Campus Rec will be placed on the centerline.
  2. Each team will start behind their end line. When the Referee blows the whistle, it will signal the start of the game, and players will be allowed to retrieve the balls.
  3. Teams will only be allowed to retrieve balls from the right side of the centerline (as they face the centerline). If balls remain on the centerline after a team has retrieved and moved their balls beyond the attack line, either team may retrieve those balls.
  4. Any excessive aggression used to retrieve a ball will be called out by the discretion of the referee. Player is subject to ejection by the referee, and additional substitutes cannot replace the ejected player.
  5. Opening Rush Rule: Each and every ball retrieved at the opening rush must first be taken or passed beyond the attack line and into the team’s back court before it may be legally thrown at an opponent.
  6. The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them out.

An OUT is scored by:

  1. Hitting a player with a live thrown ball below the shoulders. A player who is hit in the head is not out. The thrower is out.
  2. If the player is hit in the head as they are ducking or dodging, he/she is out. No consequence for the thrower.
  3. Catching a live thrown ball by your opponent. The team that caught the ball returns eliminated player to their team. Players return to the game in the order that they were eliminated.
  4. If a thrown ball is deflected and then caught before it hits the ground, the thrower is out.
  5. Causing an opponent to drop a held ball as a result of contact by a thrown live ball. (usually occurs when a ball is being used to block a thrown ball)
  6. A ball rebounding off a “catch” attempt may be caught before touching the floor, wall or backboard by any in bounds player on the “hit” players team. Result: The thrower is out
  1. With Regards to Boundaries, a player can be declared out if:
  2. Any part of their body contacts the playing surface on or over centerline. Note: A player may, without penalty, step on the centerline
  3. They leave the playing area to avoid being hit by or attempt to catch a ball.
  4. Out-Of-Bounds: A player hit, a ball caught, or a ball thrown outside the boundaries of

the court does not count as an out.

  1. A ball rebounding off a wall, backboard, etc. and caught or hitting a player does not

eliminate that player.

  1. When all the players of a team have been declared out, the other team wins the game and the score is reported to the official. A new game begins if time is remaining.
  2. During play, all players must remain in the boundary lines.
  3. Players must pass through their end line only to retrieve stray balls. A stray ball is one

that has not been picked up and is lying on the ground. Only Active players may retrieve the ball.

  1. When retrieving a ball, the player must also immediately re-enter the playing area only

through their end line. Note: A player not immediately re-entering the playing area may be declared out.

  1. A player may be handed a ball, provided the player receiving the ball remains completely within their teams’ field boundaries.
  2. Five Second Violation: It is illegal for the leading team to control all the balls for more than 5 seconds. If the leading team controls all the balls they must get at least one ball across the attack line and into the opponent’s back court. If this is not done within 5 sec., a 5-sec. Violation will be called. Game is stopped and balls will be evenly divided, giving each team 2 balls, and holding the 5th ball.

  1. Mercy Rule: If a team wins 4/7 games, that team has won the play series and will be recorded as the winner on the score sheet.
