INTERNSHIP LEARNING OUTCOMES AND INSTRUCTIONS

OBJECTIVESOFINTERNSHIPMODULE

The internship module aims to provide the student with:

1.A practice-oriented and ‘hands-on’ working experience in the real world or industry, andtoenhancethestudent’slearningexperience.

2.An opportunity to develop a right work attitude, self-confidence, interpersonal skills and abilitytoworkasateaminarealorganisationalsetting.

3.An opportunity to further develop and enhance operational, customer service and other life-long knowledge and skills in a real world workenvironment.

4.Pre-employmenttrainingopportunitiesandanopportunityforthecompanyororganisation to assess the performance of the student and to offer the student an employment opportunityafterhis/hergraduation,ifitdeemsfit.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of this module, the student would:

  1. Demonstrate the application of knowledge and skill sets acquired from the course and workplace in theassigned jobfunction/s;
  1. Solve real life challenges in the workplace by analysing work environment and conditions, and selecting appropriate skill sets acquired from thecourse;
  1. Articulate career options by considering opportunities in company, sector, industry, professional andeducational advancement;
  1. Communicate and collaborate effectively and appropriately with different professionals in thework environment through written and oralmeans;
  1. Exhibit critical thinking and problem solving skillsby analysing underlying issue/s tochallenges;
  1. Demonstrate the ability to harness resources by analysing challenges and consideringopportunities;
  1. Recommend ideas to improve work effectiveness and efficiency by analysing challenges and consideringviable options;
  1. Demonstrate appreciation and respect for diversegroups of professionals by engaging harmoniously with different companystakeholders;
  1. Exhibit professional ethics by displayingpositive disposition duringinternship.

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS

  1. Always be positive, flexible and adaptable to the organisational needs. No matter how important or how insignificant you think your work is, it is part of your contribution to the organisation.
  1. Demonstrate a positive attitude in your work.
  1. Go that extra mile to contribute more than what is expected or required. Try to add value to your work assignments.
  1. Do yourbest always – no matter what you do, what position you occupy, do the best you can.
  1. Adopt a good learning attitude. Be willing to learn in order to derive maximum benefit from the attachment. Employers place a high premium on the ability to adapt and the willingness to learn.
  1. Maintain effective communication with your Company Supervisor and your School Internship Mentor (SIM). Use telephone, email or any other appropriate means as required to keep them posted on essential information.
  1. Be a good team player and co-operate with your fellow employees and work harmoniously together.
  1. Complete the “Monthly Summary of Training, Tasks and Assignments” promptly and in sufficient detail, and try to obtain feedback regularly from the Company Supervisor and/or Industry Internship Mentor (IIM).
  1. Discuss and review the e-log book and monthly reports with your SIM during each of his/her visits. Feedback promptly and highlight any areas of concern with your SIM.
  1. Avoid taking excessive MCs, unless you are genuinely not well. Regular attendance is a reflection of work attitude. Most companies or organisations also value healthy employees.
  1. Do not leave the work place without informing your Company Supervisor and obtaining permission or approval.

4.Demonstrate good team spirit and be positive, adaptable andflexible.

5.Carry out your duties or responsibilities in a professional and courteousmanner.

6.Integrity at work is very important. Keep the organisation’s business information, such as customers, suppliers, financial research and development information strictly confidential.

7.Obtain prior approval from your SIM and the Company Supervisor of the organisation if you need to be absent from yourworkplace.

FOR YOURINFORMATION

1.Certificate of Participation

The certificate will be awarded to the student provided the student achieves:

a)An attendance rate of 100% during the placement period (excluding medical and other emergencyleave).

b)50% overall passing mark or higherin the final assessment.

2.Absenteeism

The student is requiredto:

a)Alert the SIM and the Company Supervisor immediately about the absence.

b)Obtain approval from the SIM and the Company Supervisor in writing by submitting the absence form, at least 3 days prior to his/her absence if the student is making a special request for permission for leave of absence. (Note: Such leave of absence will only be granted under exceptionalcircumstances)

c)Submit the original medical certificate, and other supporting documents to the Company Supervisor, and copies to the SIM.

3.Assessment

The student will be assessed based on the following criteria:

4.Insurance

a)Internship students are covered by Group Personal Accident Insurance, Work Injury Compensation, and Group Hospitalisation and Surgical Insurance,

b)In case of accidents, the student must inform the Company Supervisor and the SIM immediately or as soon as possible.

c)Studentswho wish to take additional insurance coverage should make theirownarrangements.

5.StudentDiscipline

The following is a non-exhaustive list of the types of misconduct which can lead to disciplinary action and/or the student’s removal from internship and failure in the module. (A student is deemed to have failed the internship module, if he/she is removed from the Company)

a)Absence without official permission or poor punctuality and attendancerecords.

b)Misconduct e.g. smoking at the workplace, absence without approval, bad language, insolence, offensive behaviour, insubordination, refusal to obey instructions, failure to comply with the organisation’s safetyrules.

c)Lack of professionalism atwork.

d)Damaging of organisation’s property through carelessness or negligence.

e)Lack ofintegrity.

f)Failure to report to the assigned company or organisation assigned on the date of the commencement of the attachmentprogramme.

g)Any other reasons sufficiently serious to justify disciplinaryaction.
