Frequently Asked Questions for Participants

Visa

If you need visa to Korea, you should apply for your visa by yourself at Korean embassy in your country. You might need to bring our official invitation letter that we sent you and if you need any help to get your visa, KIGAM might contact with the embassy. However since we do not have any authority to issue visa, you should apply through Korean embassy in your country.KIGAM cannot guarantee or help for receiving visa in case of late application. Please apply early to avoid delay. We do not accept late arrival for the courses caused byyour visa problem.

Arrival Information by yourself

  1. Ride an Airport Limousine Bus at the gate 9D of Incheon Airport.

Ticket booth: in front of the gate 9D.

Fare: 22,100/24,300won (Depends on the bus type/ the bus leaves every 20-40min.)

Turnaround time: About 3 hours (A bus may stop at rest stop for snacks and restroom.)

  1. Take off at 'Daejeon Jeongboocheongsa subway station’, second stop of the bus to Daejeon.

You will see the building, ‘KDB Bank’ or the building, ‘Samsung Life’.

For those who wish to arrive late

We do not accept late arrival for the courses however if there is an unavoidable circumstances, you should prepare an official letter from your institution explaining the circumstances. Also we would charge you fee for your flight cancelation. (For those who got the tickets from KIGAM)

Things you need to bring

We highly recommend you to bring your personal items with you such as shampoo, tooth brush, tooth paste, a razor, pen, umbrella, and etc. because we are not renting expendable supplies. It is also possible to purchase those items here in Korea. There is a shop in KIGAM selling groceries, stationeries, dairies, bread and etc. (opens 8:30~19:00) Alsooutside of KIGAM several shops are available. (opens 24 hours).

Weather & Climate in Korea

Korea is geographically situated in a temperate climate zone at medium latitude. As a result, it has four distinct seasons and is in spring from March to May.

Spring is clear and dry due to the influence of anticyclones. The temperature can also vary greatly, causing seasonal occurrences like spring cold. The average temperature of Korea in late spring-summer is around 10~26°C.The temperature varies greatly from day to night.

You should preparejackets for an anomalousweather.

Please bring comfortable shoes, a hat and so on with you for field trips.

Dress Code

KIGAM does not care how all participants dress.

Currency Exchange

We recommend you should exchange at least 150,000 KRW worth money (less than US$ 150) at airport in case you come to KIGAM by yourself.

Please consider when preparing Korean money that DSA will be distributed in middle of first week and amount is 27,000KRW/day.

Food

For everyone there is cafeteria at KIGAM. It provides three meals a day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A meal costs only 3,500won (KRW). Everyday menu varies and mostly it is Korean style. You could purchase meal tickets from vending machine in cafeteria and have a choice whether you would have a meal at KIGAM cafeteria or other places.

For those who want to cook your meal yourself and for vegetarians, we provide a kitchen so that you could cook your meals. Our kitchen is equipped with inductions, microwave ovens, pans, pots, and dishes. There are markets near KIGAM where you could buy groceries-vegetables, seafood, dairy products, bread, fruits and etc. Also there is a grocery store for Muslims which is located 10min away from KIGAM.

If you want to try variety of food near KIGAM, you could go outside to have your meals or deliver it to KIGAM where you would be staying. There are lots of restaurants serving Korean, Chinese, Japanese style food and even fast-food. For the kinds of food and information about restaurant area near KIGAM, please refer the guide book, ‘Living in KIGAM’

Cultural Trip

Cultural trip varies upon the courses. The destinations will be informed at least a week earlier and brochures will be distributed.

Going out on your day off

Every weekend is day off if there is no special field or cultural trip, so you could go out for your free time. For the transportation, there are taxis, buses. The nearest of malls, markets, and movie theaters are within 30min by car. If you wish to go further, we are pleased to provide you information. Also you could enjoy your day off at KIGAM. We are equipped with variety of sports gears such as bicycles, basketballs, badminton rackets, and tabletennis. Also we have TVs and computers at lounges.

We recommend you visit Geological Museum of KIGAM on the weekend. It opens 10:00~17:00 so it would be hard to visit on weekdays due to your classes. It is right beside the main gate of KIGAM.

Laundry & wash items

Your room will be fully equipped with a bed, beddings, desk, chair and wardrobe. Also your beddings and towels will be provided by KIGAM and it will be cleaned and replaced by a housekeeper of KIGAM. However, toiletries will not be provided. You should prepare your tooth brush, tooth paste, shampoo, body-wash, and cosmetics.And for personal laundries, we provide you washing machines on 3rd and 5th floor of KIGAM. There are also irons for you convenience.

Religion

For Catholic, Christian, Muslim, and Buddhist, we could inform you the nearest church, mosque, or temple having English service upon your request. We respect your religion and events related to your religion.

Shopping

You could go out for shopping on your free time. There are department stores, mega malls, and underground markets and down towns. Most of places could be reached by bus no.604 which passes by KIGAM. (Bus fare is 1,200 KRW.) You could refer ‘Living in KIGAM’ for more information.

Overcharge of baggage weight

Overcharge of baggage weight depends on the countries and flights. We do not cover the overcharges but those who wish to bring extra weight, we could inform how much would cost and limitation of weight.
