02.03.2014Orchids and Butterflies in Northern Bavaria

The sheer beauty of the Upper Franconian countryside is common knowledge. It is, however, less well-known that orchids are not only to be found in the tropics, but also right here on our doorstep, in our native woods and meadows. This presentation will show off two of the natural treasures of the Fichtelgebirge, in all their variety and splendour: butterflies and orchids. Alongside the pictures, a selection of background information on species and habitats will be provided, with some interesting anecdotes about the photos themselves.

This impressive presentation of photos with Florian Fraaβ is the ideal way to get a glimpse of just how stunning the area’s natural beauty really is.

22.03.2014“Bierkultur auf dem Kirchberg” (Beer Culture on the Kirchberg)

(Comedian’s website: )

A bit of cabaret each at the “Starkbier” (malt liquor) festival has become somewhat of a tradition. This time round it plays host to a Franconian performer by the name of Jörg Kaiser, who made his regional debut in November. When Jörg Kaiser’s verbal floodgates open up, you can guarantee anything you can think of will get thrown into the mix – whatever the daily absurdities of life have armed him with. On the agenda: bluntness, a good helping of sarcasm, linguistic gymnastics and plenty of dark humour – aimed at any quirks of nature that cross the comedian’s path. As a side dish to “Kaiser’s Nonsense”, the “Wasserkniedner Fastenorchesterla” are set to serve up some of the classic Franconian drinking tunes to get everyone joining in. Meanwhile, the Society for Art and Culture in the Old Kindergarten will be on hand to take good care of your taste buds with lent bock beer and Franconian specialities straight from the “lent kitchen”.

Alter Kindergarten, Bad Berneck; Starting time; 7.30pm; Tickets are available in advance from “Münch” stationers in Bad Berneck. Further information at or tel. 0921/5606810.

28.03.2014Parental input:a crucial factor in the healthy development of gifted and talented children (presentation)

Highly-talented children – where do they come from? Are they the model pupils that breeze through school without any hiccups or problems? Are they the child-geniuses that get fast-tracked, skip years at school, take part in extra-curricular activities (such as learning languages or musical instruments) and still take their leaver’s exams early? Is it those children who were already able to read and write before they even went to school?

This is actually a far cry from reality. Behavioural problems, bad marks at school (although one might expect otherwise), lack of concentration, apathy and other problems plague both the children themselves and their parents.

In light of this and during the course of the evening, we will explore how parents can best support their children in their development. This is best done together, so that ideas can be exchanged between parents in a similar situation. The presenter will identify the problem areas that exist in the development of highly-talented children, as well as introducing the participants to the “Hochbegabung” Forum, which provides a platform for parents to share ideas with others in the same situation, which can then be used to help their own children.

Presenter: Sabine Schraml, Educationalist for Gifted and Talented Children, Administrator of the “Hochbegabung” Forum, Hof

30.03.2014“Die Paradeschwestern”

For the second time, the Himmelkron Hospices Musicals Group bring “Paradeschwestern” (Sisters on parade), their funny, family-friendly take on Sister Act, to the stage. Once again – there’ll be singing and dancing aplenty as a woman finds help and shelter among an order of nuns, and after plenty of trials and tribulations finds her way to a happy ending. The group’s director, music teacher Olga Hühner, does an excellent job of showing just what talent those with disabilities can bring to the stage.
