Guidelines (2012) for Application for the Japanese Government Scholarship by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbu-kagaku-sho)

Thisbrochureisintendedtogiveprincipalguidelinesforyear2012 to overseas studentswho wish to study as international students in the Graduate Schools of the University of Tokushima, Japanon scholarships from the Japanese Government.

l.FIELDS OF STUDY AND NUMBER OF GRANTEES

(1) The Graduate Schools offer courses for Ph.D. in the fields of Medicine, Nutrition and Bioscience, Oral Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

(2) Number of grantees for 2012: two students

2. QUALIFICATIONS

(1) Nationality: Must be citizens of countries eligible for the Japanese Government Scholarship (applicants residing in Japan at the time of application are not eligible).

(2) Age: Applicants must be those who were born after April 2, 1977.

(3) Academic Background:

A: Graduate School of Nutrition and Bioscience(Ph.D.) and Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences(Ph.D.)

a.Must have obtained a master's degree outside of Japan by September 30,2012.

b. Credentials must be recognized by the Graduate Schools of the University of Tokushima as equal to or higher than that of master's degree.

B: Graduate School of Medical Science(Ph.D.)and Graduate School of Oral sciences (Ph.D.)

a. Must have completed 18-year schooling outside of Japan by September 30,2012.

b. Credentials must be recognized as equivalent to that of the School of Medicine or the School of Dentistryof the University of Tokushima.

(4) Health: Applicants must be in good health

(5) Language Ability: Applicants must have sufficient knowledge and skills in English.

(6) Arrival in Japan: Applicants must arrive in Japan between September 25 and October 7, 2012.

* If an applicant fails to arrive to Japan within the period above mentioned,

the Japanese Government will cancel his/her acceptance.

(Note 1) Military personnel and military civilian employees are not eligible for this scholarship sif they remain on active duty registered on the active list.

(Note 2) An applicant receiving a scholarship from their government or private organizations are ineligible for this scholarship.

(Note 3)Admission will be cancelled if the applicant fails to graduate from his/her undergraduate or master course by September, 2012.

3. TERMS OF SCHOLARSHIP

Three or four year maximum for Ph.D. starting from October,2012.

4. SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS

(1) Scholarship:145,000 yen per monthwill be given to each grantee during the term of his/her scholarship.However, the scholarship will be suspended if a grantee is long absent from the university.

(2) Travel and Other Expenses:

A: Transportation to Japan: The grantee will be supplied with an economy class air ticket from the international airport nearest to his/her home address to Kansai International Airport, Osaka, Japan.

B: Transportation from Japan: The grantee going back to his/her home country within the fixed period after the expiration of the scholarship will be supplied, upon application, with an economy class air ticket from Kansai International Airport, Osaka, Japan to the international airport nearest to his/her home address.

(3) Tuition and Other School Fees: Fees for the entrance examination, enrollment and tuition will be exempted.

Note: Domestic travel expenses from a grantee’s residence to the nearest international airport and other related domestic travel expenses in the grantee’s home country, including airport taxes and other taxes necessary for the domestic travel, have to be paid by the grantee. Travel insurances for the grantee’s round trips to/from Japan have to be also paid by the grantee.

5. APPLICATION PROCEDURE

All the following documents must be submitted to the International Affairs Division through the applicant's supervisor. All the documents must be received between February 13 and March 2, 2012.

(1) Completed application form for Scholarship from the Japanese Government (Monbu-kagaku-sho) : one (original)

(2) Completed application form for admission to the University of Tokushima: one (original)

(3)Certificates of graduation (or expected graduation) from the undergraduate course and/or the graduate school attended: one (original)

(4)Official academic transcripts with GPA or equivalent information from the undergraduate course and/or from the graduate school attended: one (original)

Note: If the university does not issue an official academic transcript with GPA or equivalent information, applicants have to attach another official document to prove their academic excellence in the courses.

(5) Thesis by which the applicant earned his/her master's degree or its equivalent (in English)

: one (copy)

If the applicant attended a master's program which does not require a master's thesis, please state so and submit its equivalent. A graduate of a medical or dental school needs not submit a bachelor’s thesis.

(6) Certificate of family register or citizenship in the applicant's home county (if applicable)

: one (original)

(7) Photograph taken within the past 6 months: one (original)

(4.5 x 3.5 cm-sized, upper frontal view without headgear)

Write the name and nationality on the back, and paste it on the application form as indicated.

(8)Documents showing evidence of language proficiency or any other professional ability (for instance, transcript of TOEFL, TOEIC, and Japanese LanguageProficiency Test. etc...)

(Note 1) Applicants must continuously contact their prospective supervisor to discuss their research in the course since supervisors must submit the student's study plan to Monbu-kagaku-sho.

(Note 2) All the documents should be typed in English on paper of the same size (A4 size).

(Note 3) Documents (1)and(2) should be prepared on the prescribed forms by the University of Tokushima.

(Note4) Documents (1) must be printed on both sides.

(Note5) In Document (2), recommendation letter to the President of the University of Tokushima must be made by the Dean of the applicant’s undergraduate/graduate school or the Head of the applicant’s department/institution.

(Note 6) No application will be accepted unless all the documents mentioned above are fully and accurately completed. Any application arriving after the deadline will not be accepted.

(Note 7) The documents once submitted will not be returned to applicants for any reason.

6. SELECTION AND ACCEPTANCE

(1) The Graduate School at the University of Tokushima will select candidates from applicants by screening application documents, and recommend them to Monbu-kagaku-sho.

(2)Monbu-kagaku-sho will make a final decision after reviewing all documents, and notify the University of Tokushima of the results.

(3) All applicants who have been accepted will be notified July 2012.

7. DATE OF ADMISSION: October 1,2012

8. FEATURES OF GRADUATE COURSES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

(1) The scope of the courses covers all aspects of medicine, nutrition, dentistry and pharmaceutical sciences relevant to health biosciences.

(2) Students will engage in studying and research using English to be able to work at international organizations such as World Health Organization (WHO) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The courses are also intended to make Japanese students able to discuss scientific matters in English.

(3) Students must submit a dissertation on their research work to the Graduate Schools at the University of Tokushima. If the Graduate Schools accept the dissertation as adequate for a doctor's degree, grantees will be awarded Ph.D.degree.

9. IMPORTANT NOTES

(1) Grantees will be deprived of their scholarship in any of the following cases:

a. When any false statements on application documents are found,

b. When violations of any article of the pledge to the Monbukagaku-daijin (Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Government of Japan) are found,

c. When students receive disciplinary punishment by the university or if they have no prospect for obtaining satisfactory achievement in academics,

d. When students change their VISA status from “College Student,” or

e. When they receive a scholarship from another organization.

Note: The scholarship will be suspended, if a grantee is long absent from the university.

(2) Accepted students are advised to have some general knowledge of Japanese climate, customs and manners, university education and conditions before coming to Japan. Studying and research are conducted in English, but accepted students are strongly advised to study the Japanese language for daily life.
