Personal interests

Task 1: / Can discuss their personal interests or hobbies

Activity instructions

Discuss the questions about personal interests

Worksheet 1: Talking about personal interests

Read the questions and discuss together.

Encourage learner to ask the questions to the tutor.

Write an opinion essay

Worksheet 2: Opinion essay

Learner reads the statements and agrees or disagrees with each one.

Encourage learner to express their opinion orally and to back up arguments with reasons.

Learner chooses a statement (topic) and discusses their opinion fully with the tutor.

Learner writes the essay. (This can be done for homework).

Reading the newspaper

Task 2: / Can locate specific information from a television guide
Can demonstrate understanding of a news article
Vocabulary: / programs, channels, rating, parental guidance, educational, informative, brainwashing, advertisements, invented, appropriate, audience, closed captions, lottery, prize, significant, mutter, cynical, life support system, ‘brink of death’, ‘giving up on him’, ‘come a full circle’, ‘beaten the odds’, ‘ thank my lucky stars’

Preparation

Find a human interest story from a newspaper (a local paper or a daily newspaper) and bring to session.

Activity instructions

Discuss the issues about watching TV

Worksheet 3: Talking about watching TV

Learner reads and discusses the questions.

Encourage learner to direct some questions to the tutor.

Locate specific information from a TV guide

Worksheet 4: TV guide

  1. Learner reads the TV guide.

Direct learner to the ratings after each show and encourage them to guess the purpose and meaning. (CC – ‘closed captions’ is the process of displaying text on the television to provide additional or interpretive information to individuals who wish to access it.)

  1. Learner matches the rating abbreviations to the meanings.

Ask learner to find the programs with the different ratings.

  1. Learner answers the questions.

Answer questions about a newspaper article

Worksheet 5: Newspaper article

  1. Ask learner to read the headline and predict what the story is about.

Learner reads the text and answers the questions.

  1. Learner reads the full article.

Encourage learner to read the whole text first without using a dictionary.

Learner reads the questions and locates the specific information required.

Ask learner to read the text again and to underline any words they don’t understand.

Learner looks up the meanings in their dictionary.

Explanation may be needed for: brink of death, giving up on him, come a full circle, beaten the odds, to thank my lucky stars.

Correct the answers together.

Bilingual dictionary

  1. Learner reads the headline and looks at the picture to predict what the story is about.
  1. Learner reads the article and underlines any new vocabulary.

Learner looks up the meanings of the words in their bilingual dictionary.

  1. Learner re-tells the story to the tutor.

Ask learner to summarise and write the story in their own words.
