Intermediate Injury Prevention Course, Session Title: IP Intervention Theory

Core Topic: Injury Prevention Intervention Theory

Session Goal: To provide Participants with IP intervention theory tools that can be used to identify and select appropriate intervention strategies.

Total Session Time: 115 minutes

Session Objectives:

  • Review Level 1 intervention theory principles.
  • Describe the multiple targets for change concept.
  • Review the intervention development models.
  • Describe Dr. Haddon’s 10 technical strategies.
  • Introduce Dr. Fowler’s intervention development decision matrix.

/ Introduce Haddon’s 10 countermeasures /
Briefly describe Haddon’s 10 countermeasures including examples. This is an opportunity to introduce the countermeasure. There is time for discussion/questions during the “Gallery Walk” exercise.

Exercise

/ “Gallery Walk” /
Divide the class into 6 to 10 groups of 2 to 4 people. Assign each group 3 to 4 counter measure stations. Be sure to separate group assignments so that the class members are spread around the room. Time this activity so that groups are moving on to their next counter measure every 3 to 5 minutes. Participant instructions for this exercise are located on slide 21 and in the notes view.
