Integrated Arts Lesson Plan #2

Name: Bo Green

Grade Level: 8th Estimated Length of Time: 55 mins. Date of Lesson: 5/5-6

Key Terms (Stage 1): Quadratic functions, quadratic formula, radicals (square roots), solutions, x-intercepts, parabolas

Concepts: Quadratic equations and parabolic graphs

Arts Integrated: Music, Movement (Drama and Dance) and Story Telling

Determining Acceptable Evidence (Stage 2): Students will compose Quadratic Formula songs in groups of two or three matching formula lyrics to a melody of their choice in singing the formula. They will perform their songs in a “Quadratic Idol” competition between Grade 8 Red and Gold teams involving two classes of students with the winners determined by applause volume and duration. Students may also choose to create an iMovie of their performance.

Planned Learning Experiences (Stage 3): Using their MacBook laptops, students collaborate in groups of two or three to choose a song and match the quadratic formula lyrics, seeking to create both mathematic understanding in using the formula and artistic impression on the audience.

Materials and Equipment: MacBook laptop computers and props of student choice such as meter sticks to keep musical beat

Procedure:

· Introduction: Students have already learned the derivation of the formula and used it to solve quadratic equations. For the song lesson students will be shown examples of other musical compositions from around the world using YouTube. They will witness children as young as 2 years old up to teachers performing a song variation. The varying styles and ages of performers always amazes students.

· Body of Lesson:

·Teacher introduces the lesson (3 mins.)

·Teacher shows YouTube examples (10 mins.)

·Students choose the song and develop performances (15 mins.)

·Students practice performances in their class (10 mins.)

·Students perform in the “Quadratic Idol” competition with the

other learning community (15 mins.)

·Teacher closes the lesson (2 mins.)

· Closure or Planned Endings: Teacher leads a discussion where

students connect the power of combining mathematics and artistic skill to

create long-term understanding and retention
