Brief outline of duties
This form is an “Instrument of Appointment” as prescribed in RMIT workplace agreements. This form is not a contract of employment between you and RMIT.
The start and end dates, number of hours to be worked and outline of duties stated in this document are only an estimate and may be changed by RMIT University at any time according to the requirements of the University. It is noted that you will be paid for any additional duties required during this engagement. As a casual employee you are engaged by the hour and paid for on an hourly basis, which includes a loading related to award based benefits, for which a casual employee is not eligible, which includes all leave and other similar entitlements.
The terms and conditions of employment for casual employees including information on superannuation entitlements are contained in the relevant Agreement/s, and RMIT University policies and procedures applying to your casual employment with RMIT University. Please ensure that you have discussed RMIT’s induction processes with your supervisor, and that you have provided Certified copies to your supervisor of any qualifications required by RMIT policy and that copies of mandatory professional registrations have been provided and are current.
General Responsibilities of Staff: Your general responsibilities as an RMIT employee are set out in RMIT's policy on the General Responsibilities of Staff (Policy Number 519). Please refer to this policy for further information.
Intellectual Property: All rights to industrial and intellectual property (including but not limited to any idea, product, process, work, result, design or concept), produced by a member of staff in pursuance of the members Instrument of Appointment with RMIT, vest in the University.

Overview of Terms and Conditions of Employment for Casual staff at RMIT
Casual employment means a person engaged by the hour and paid on an hourly basisthat includes a loading related to some benefits for which a casual staff member isnot eligible.
- A casual staff member can be engaged by the hour to cover short term, irregularand generally unplanned or ad hoc vacancies.
- All casual staff are engaged and paid by the hour.
- A casual staff member shall not be required to work more than five consecutivehours without a meal break.
- Each work period is a separate and distinct period of employment. Casual staff areengaged with no guarantee or expectation of work beyond the period of theircurrent employment.

Overview of Terms and Conditions of Employment for Casual staff at RMIT (cont.)- Casual staff are not entitled to payment for any public holidays unless they arerequired to work on such a day.
- Casual staff are not entitled to any paid leave of any kind.
- Casual staff are treated the same as continuing and fixed-term staff for thepurposes of workcover and occupational health and safety.
Terms and Conditions Specific to Casual Academic Staff
- Upon engagement the University shall provide the staff member with a copy of the Instrument of Appointment form which stipulates the type of employment and informs the staff member of the terms of engagement at the time of the appointment in relation to: duties required; number of hours required; rate of pay for each class of duty required; and a statement that any additional duties required during the term will be paid for.
- As a casual Academic staff member of RMIT you have the choice to be employed under the conditions of the Academic and General Staff Enterprise Agreement or an Australian Workplace Agreement (AWA). For details regarding these agreements please refer to As a new staff member you have five days from the signing of this Instrument of Appointment to consider which agreement you would like to be employed under. If you choose to be employed under an AWA, it can only operate if you sign it after the five days have elapsed. Further, you have the right to appoint a Bargaining Agent. - The employment of casual Academic staff is at the discretion of the Head of School, who is responsible for ensuring that funds are available and that the appropriate selection procedures have been followed.
- Casual Academic staff can be engaged to deliver a series of lectures, tutorials or demonstrations on a casual basis for a specified term or semester, or for a shorter period to deliver lectures, tutorials or demonstrations for part of a course or unit.
- Timesheets of hours actually worked need to be submitted on a fortnightly basis.
- Payment will not be made without timesheets being submitted.
- Employee Information forms are used to create or update a staff member’s record. This form does not generate any payments. All new casual staff will be required to complete an Employee Information form on commencement. Casual staff should submit a further form if any relevant personal, banking or taxation details change whilst they are employed by RMIT.

I certify that I have not received a separation package which restricts me from accepting employment at RMIT. I consent to the collection, storage and disclosure of information concerning any acts of records falsification or other irregular acts in relation to myself and to RMIT contacting the institution where my highest qualification was awarded to validate my qualifications.”
