Course description: Spanish 101. Introduction to Spanish I (5 units)

This course is an introduction to the nature of the discipline and the

fundamentals of Spanish language and culture. It emphasizes the

development of the basic language skills: listening, speaking, reading,

and writing.

TEXTBOOKS MUST BE BROUGHT TO CLASS FOR EACH CLASS DAY.

* Note: Students are to read through all of the pages in the textbook of each Capítulo

(Chapter) covered in Spanish101 as they would in any university class at CSUB.

All students will be matched up with 1 in-class cooperative learning partner

by Dr. Schmidt to complete the communicative activities throughout the textbook

during the entire quarter. During each class, Dr. Schmidt will specify

the exact communicative exercises to be completed in each class in the textbook by

writing their numbers and pages on the board. Students are expected to be

cooperative with each other and to keep on task with their partners as they work

through the communicative activities in oral Spanish. Rude, disruptive or

disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated in Spanish 101. TEXTBOOKS MUST

BE BROUGHT TO CLASS. Communicative activities create a workshop type

environment during class time, which is good for students trying to become more

conversational in beginning Spanish; however, when Dr. Schmidt says, “Un momento, por

favor”, she is asking for silence in the classroom. Muchas gracias por su atención.

GENTE SAM (Student Activities Manual) WORKBOOK & LABWORK MANUAL:

1) Pages 1 through 116* must be completed for 25% of the final grade.

These pages, which are divided by Capítulos (Chapters): C1(pp.2-12),

C2 (pp.17-29), C3 (pp.34-49), C4 (pp.55-70), C5 (pp.77-92) and, C6 (pp.98-116],

will be graded individually by lesson, i.e., C1 will be graded from A-F, and C2, C3,

etc., will be graded from A-F. As a result, you will receive 6 separate grades for the 6

lessons you are required to complete. Please complete all exercises on the

required pages for C1(pp.1-16), etc. IN OTHER WORDS, DO NOT SUBMIT

YOUR WORKBOOK WRITTEN EXERCISES AND AUDIO WRITTEN

AUDIO-BASED EXERCISES WITH SOME BLANK ANSWER LINES OR

BOXES, ETC. ON EXERCISES THAT YOU FAILED TO COMPLETE.

POINTS WILL BE TAKEN OFF FOR ANY ANSWERS THAT ARE LEFT

BLANK.

completing these additional pages in SAM:

Capítulos (Chapters): C1(pp.13-15), C2( pp.30-32), C3(pp.50-53), C4(pp.71-75),

C5(pp.93-96), C6( pp.117-119). By completing these pages, students may earn

1 point per chapter extra SAM pages submitted, which will be added to the

student’s final grade in the Spanish 101 course.

[Written workbook exercises (written exercises not requiring CDs) and audio manual exercises

(written audio-based exercises that require CDs must be handed in according to the dates specified on the syllabus. Both workbook and audio work manual exercises are due on the same day for each lesson covered in Spanish 101. Please follow the syllabus for your deadlines and hand in your required work for Capítulos 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Two to three hours are required each week to complete your workbook and audio work, which is on your audio CDs. If you wish to work in the Language Lab, always bring your textbook with you to the lab when working in the Language Lab on campus. You may complete your workbook and audio work assignments at home, if you do not wish to work in the language lab on campus. Most students work on the audio component at home.]

The Language Lab is located in DDH/E-102. Language Lab hours will be posted on the door of the Language Lab. Tutoring for Spanish 101 will be available in the Language Lab.

3) Oral presentation 1: “Mi vida y mi país hispano favorito”-10 sentences in Spanish

A five-minute interview with Dr. Schmidt, IN SPANISH. Topic: “Mi vida y mi país hispano favorito” (“My life and my favorite Hispanic

country”). A text of 10 sentences must be prepared in advance to be read at the interview, and handed in to Dr. Schmidt. Students must type and double space the text of their oral presentation in advance and hand it in to Dr. Schmidt after reading it. Please base what you write and say on the vocabulary and grammar in Lección preliminar

and Capítulos1-2. Also, please write directly in Spanish rather than translate from English into Spanish. Dr. Schmidt will explain and clarify this writing strategy to facilitate student success.

Oral presentation 2:“Mi viaje favorito en el mundo hispano”-10 sentences in

SpanishA five-minute interview with Dr. Schmidt, IN SPANISH.

Topic: “Mi viaje favorito en el mundo hispano” (“My favorite

trip in the Hispanic world”) A textof 10 sentences must be

prepared in advance to be read at the interview, and handed in to

Dr. Schmidt. Studentsmust type and double space the text of their

oral presentation in advance and hand it in to Dr. Schmidt after

reading it. Please base what youwrite and say on the vocabulary

and grammar in Capítulos 3-5. Also, please write directly in

student success.

4) No compositions are required in Spanish 101, only oral presentations.

**Notes: 1) Films: Spanish language films will be shown and viewed by Spanish 101 students

after each quiz as part of the class immersion in Spanish experience. Each film

is in Spanish only and is in a cultural tour, real-life type format where many

authentic everyday situations are covered. When words and grammatical

structures appear in print on the screen, Dr. Schmidt will direct students to

repeat them after her for pronunciation practice. The GENTE DVD will also

be viewed in class to reinforce pronunciation and comprehension practice.

Class attendance is mandatory. If a student must miss one class only during the quarter, please inform Dr. Schmidt of that date, in advance, so that there will be no points taken off the student’s participation grade. In the case of illness, students must provide a doctor’s letter for an absence that is medical, or an employer’s letter for an absence that is work-related. Also, if a student has a sick child at home, and informs Dr. Schmidt of this, in advance via email, that is also a valid medical excuse.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR SPANISH 101:

1) Students will acquire fundamental components of basic Spanish 101 grammar.

2) Students will acquire foundational Spanish vocabulary and will engage in basic conversation in Spanish.

3) Students will learn basic cultural information about the Spanish-speaking countries in the world.

ASSESSMENT OF SPANISH 101 STUDENTS FOR WASC ACCREDITATION:

Students will undergo both written and oral assessment during their participation in the Spanish 101 class. Assessment handouts, designed by Dr. Schmidt, will be distributed to students in class. These handouts will be completed by the students, in a collaborative manner with their cooperative learning partners, as a supplement to the regular communicative exercises that they are required to complete in the GENTE textbook in each class. Students will be given assessment scores on each handout. The assessment scores will be from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest score and 1 being the lowest. These assessment scores will be factored into the percentages for the students’ final participation grade, and they will be used to assess the students’ performance in Spanish 101 for writing.

PLEASE TURN OFF ALL CELL PHONES WHILE ATTENDING CLASS AND IF WORKING IN THE LANGUAGE LAB. NO TEXT MESSAGING IS ALLOWED DURING CLASS OR WHILE WORKING IN THE LANGUAGE LAB. CELLPHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF DURING CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION TIME FROM 12:45pm-2:50pm, AND WHILE WORKING IN THE LANGUAGE LAB. CELLPHONES MUST BE STORED IN PURSES, BACKPACKS, OR ON THE FLOOR UNDER A STUDENT’S DESK DURING CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION. THANK YOU. MUCHAS GRACIAS.

BASIC CLASSROOM MANNERS AND ETIQUETTE ARE EXPECTED OF SPANISH 101 STUDENTS. WHEN COMING TO CLASS LATE, PLEASE BE AS UNOBSTRUSIVE AS POSSIBLE. IN ADDITION, STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO NOTIFY DR. SCHMIDT, IF THEY EXPECT TO LEAVE CLASS EARLY. IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR FOR A STUDENT TO LEAVE THE CLASSROOM WITHOUT PRIOR NOTIFICATION. THANK YOU. MUCHAS GRACIAS.

NO STUDENT MAY CHANGE THE SCHEDULED DATE AND TIME OF HIS OR HER QUIZZES, ORAL PRESENTATIONS, OR FINAL EXAM WITHOUT AN URGENT EXCUSE (medical, etc.). NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES, ORAL PRESENTATIONS OR FINAL EXAMS ARE ALLOWED. ONE ABSENCE DURING THE 10-WEEK QUARTER IS ALLOWED WITH PRIOR NOTIFICATION. EACH ABSENCE EXCEEDING THE ONE ALLOWED WILL EQUAL -5 POINTS FROM A STUDENT'S FINAL GRADE FOR THE ENTIRE QUARTER PER ABSENCE.

MORE THAN THREE (3) LATES TO CLASS WILL RESULT IN A DROP IN THE FINAL COURSE GRADE OF FIVE (5) POINTS.IN ADDITION, IF A STUDENT REACHES SIX (6) ABSENCES DURING A 10-WEEK QUARTER, THE RESULTING GRADE WILL BE AN F FOR THE ENTIRE COURSE.

A student's grade will depend on the following factors:

Quizzes 25%

Classroom participation (includes oral presentations) 25%

Workbook & labwork (C1,C2,C3,C4,C5,C6) 25%

Final exam 25%

THERE WILL BE NO MID-TERM EXAMINATION. A student's mid-term grade will be determined on the basis of quizzes, workbook and audiowork exercises, and classroom participation.

GRADING PROCEDURE: The grading system in all Spanish courses is identical to the one described on page 70 of the 2009-2011 CSUB Catalog. Students will be given letter grades on all of their quizzes; on their written workbook and labwork exercises,on their classroom participation, and on their final exam.

The letter grades given will be as follows: A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, F

INTEGRITY OF SCHOLARSHIP AND GRADES/ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

The CSUB rules regarding the integrity of scholarship will be strictly enforced. For your information, the rules, as they appear on page 80 of the 2009-2011 CSUB Catalog are as follows:

The principles of truth and honesty are recognized as fundamental to a community of teachers and scholars. The University expects that both faculty and students will honor these principles and in so doing protect the validity of University grades. This means that all academic work will be done by the student to whom it is assigned, without unauthorized aid of any kind. Instructors, for their part, will exercise care in the planning and supervision of academic work so that honest effort will be positively encouraged.

Plagiarism, the practice of taking ideas and writings from another and offering them as one's own, is a form of cheating and is unacceptable. It may consist of handing in someone else's work, copying a composition, using ideas, paragraphs, sentences, or phrases written by another or using ideas, data, and statistics compiled by another. This includes rearrangement of phrases from the original into a new pattern.

When using ideas, interpretations, or material written or compiled by another, acknowledgement of indebtedness to the original author or source must be made by the use of quotation marks, footnotes or similar references.

A student may not submit a paper (or two papers which are substantially the same) for credit in two different courses unless a prior agreement to accept such work has been made between the instructors involved.

If any instance of academic dishonesty is discovered by an instructor, it is the instructor's responsibility to give a failing grade to the student for the course. In every case, the instructor should notify in writing the Dean of Students and the dean of the school in which the student is enrolled of the circumstances of the case. In all cases of academic dishonesty, the first offense will result in the student's receiving an "F" in the course and the second offense will result in termination of the student's enrollment at the University.

A student may appeal any sanction employed by the instructor and the University based upon an allegation of academic dishonesty by initiating grievance procedures within no more than fifteen (15) school days (academic year) after notification of the grade is mailed or personally given to the student. Procedures are available in the School deans' offices.
