Abstract Aim: This survey is to study social network and close friendships; self-determination; and expectation for their future for seven adult people with intellectual disabilities living in one municipality. This covers most of their everyday life in Northern Norway.
Method: Focus group method was used. This study was carried out with seven adults with intellectual disabilities from one township/municipality in Northern Norway. Three of them were women and four were men. They are living in their own apartments and have fulltime jobs in the Township. They each received their social security pension added with some money for motivation. This seven people met in four meetings. Each meeting was between one and one and a half hour.
Results: The result of this study was an experience of how adults with intellectual disabilities express their own views of their own life in a municipality. Their social network and close friendship, their view on their self-determination and also expectations for their future. A focus group is also a way of developing social capital.
Conclusion: This study has given a marginal group of people a voice of their own, expression their own experience. The discussions in the group has given them experience to meet expectations of inclusion in the society
