Reschedule Times? Alternates?
- Assessment, Assessment Plans, Deadlines Bajrami
Made significant progress towards producing SLOs. However, the percentages are very low regarding course and program assessment. By Fall 2012, we must complete ALL forms of assessment. The challenge for COA is to collectively come together to complete what is necessary. We need to focus on the PROCESS of assessment. Each cluster should be responsible for creating their own plan for assessment. But they must be accountable to produce assessment plans by specific dates.
Comment: We need assessment of 100% of ACTIVE classes. Even courses that have not been offered need SLOs. Examples: DVC spends an entire day (mandatory) to start the assessment process. We need to move forward to complete the process regardless of how far behind we are. How do we make the assessment process useful for instruction (not just an “additional” task).
Comment: How do finish forms of assessment in time? We must assess courses every semester (not wait until the end of the year). We need funnel pre-existing forms of assessment into a formalized documentation process.
Assessment binders and program mapping tools will be available for all faculty and staff. Chair or the person designated will gather anonymous results for individual courses.
Comment: Should we create a subcommittee based on assessment? Should we have more training in TaskStream? Should we create subgroups on specific topics? We must create timetables for assessment plans for each cluster or department. We should be at “proficiency” by 2011. Accreditation is a rigorous process.
Comment: How do we make assessment mandatory during FLEXDAYS? The chairs and individual instructors are responsible for creating assessment plans. Challenge: How do we apply peer pressure to create action?
Comment: We must show evidence of SLOs on ALL syllabi. WE need a mechanism to check up on the process. We should send off a group email before the Christmas break emphasizing the printing of SLOs on syllabi. The Deans and VPIs contain the syllabi from all courses. Perhaps we should have the faculty submit their syllabi to their chairs to streamline the process. Are their any consequences for not including required information on all syllabi? Analogy: licensing in other programs, ethical or professional practices required.
Comment: Example: GIFT, a peer-review program. Nationally recognized tool for faculty-peer assessment. Voluntary program. Full-time faculty members have not attended class without notification.
Comment: State-Academic Senate has guidelines we should follow. Send around a formal College of Alameda syllabus template. Online classes should submit paper copies of their syllabi. What about the Curriculum Committee? The CC can serve as a body that checks individual courses (especially SLOs).
Comment: Faculty joining together to create a similar syllabi form with standards. Check existing policies across the State. Implement the policies. Syllabi is a legal document. Send a campus syllabus template. Intranet space for faculty or staff. Binder of old faculty syllabi (past practice).
Comment: IEC validated the idea of assessment across various campus programs. Should be in planning handbook. Build in SLOs in non-instructional areas. Emphasize cross-fertilization of programs. SLOs will align and match across programs. Make everyone feel a part of the campus.
Comment: Teaching and Learning Center. Workshops on Peer Evaluation Tools. Library houses Program Reviews and other documents.
Consensus to move forward on assessment within the IEC.
- Follow-up on Developing a Tangible Plan of Action Kenney/Brem
- Reflections 1st semester of IEC Bajrami
Comment: We have to figure out a way to use the data to improve student learning. Set aside time within IEC to work on this. Very difficult process. Important to be effective as an institution. Film or document best practices presentations, and post elsewhere as evidence. Utilize expertise and all types of data.
Comment: Come up with a year-long schedule or calendar (online). Need a master calendar. Workshop possibly needed.
