  1. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is the American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid course. Students will be introduced to common medical, traumatic, and environmental emergencies as well as basic first aid procedures.

III.COURSE OBJECTIVES

  2. Describe the signs of heart attack, stroke, cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, and FBAO in adults.
  3. Name five things you should look for at the scene of an emergency. plain what “universal precautions” are.
  4. List two diseases that universal precautions can prevent.
  5. List three pieces of personal protective equipment.
  6. Explain what you should do if you are exposed to blood or other body fluids.
  7. Give five examples of when you should phone your emergency response number for help.
  8. List five things you should look for in a victim.
  9. Describe how a responsive and unresponsive victim behaves.
  10. Explain how to look for bleeding.
  11. Explain how to check for medical information jewelry.
  12. Explain how to ask a responsive victim what the problem is.
  13. Tell how a first aid rescuer might feel after an emergency.
  14. Discuss the importance of confidentiality.
  15. List the signs of a bad allergic reaction.
  16. List the first aid actions for someone with a bad allergic reaction.
  17. Describe the first aid actions for fainting.
  18. Describe the signs of low blood sugar in a diabetic.

  37. Show the first aid actions for a victim with a head and possible spinal cord injury.
  38. Demonstrate various splinting techniques.
