Installation Notes for EdGCM 3.2 (b926) on Windows PCs

1. The latest copy of the EdGCM Windows demo for installation can be downloaded from

2. Please note that there are two additional updates for Windows 7 users that must be downloaded and applied separately once the demohas been installed; see this page for instructions and additional download links:

3. The license keys should only be used on a single group of computers, e.g., in the computer lab in your department. They cannot be shared in additional labs belonging to other departments. They also cannot be used with EdGCM installed on students' personal computers.

3. Note that the license key validation process links the key to specific hardware identifiers in our license database, which enables us to determine if the keys are being used appropriately. Normally, each license key + machine would be a unique combination. If at any time the department computer lab should adopt the practiceof setting up one PC and ghosting the hard drive across the network, we will permit the use of a single license key on multiple lab computers (up to the maximum number of licenses purchased). We ask that you let us know you're doing this so that the key isn't flagged for inappropriate distribution. Also, the remaining unused license keys should be considered "in reserve" and cannot be used on any other machine as long as a single license key is in use on multiple computers.

4. EdGCM cannot be run in server mode. It is possible, however, to archive model output on a server for copying onto local machines.

5. IMPORTANT: EdGCM MUST be installed to a directory location where students will have write access. It cannot be installed into C:\Program Files, because then students will not have sufficient permissions to run the software, which is essentially a database wrapper around a suite of other programs. (The EVA visualization program is the only component that should be installed toC:\Program Files, and it is set to do so by default.)The default installation for the EdGCM folder is to the user's desktop. Alternatively, EdGCM can be installed at the root level (e.g., C:\EdGCM) to avoid permissions problems and still protect C:\Program Files from unwanted tinkering.

6. EdGCM model output files generally consume 3GB of disk space per simulation. If you run any maintenance scripts designed to clean up student or desktop folders on logout, you may decide to go for the root level installation option in any case, otherwise students' work may be wiped out when they log out.
