Job Purpose
The purpose of this role will be to support all aspects of the Middleton Men’s Shed project by working directly with beneficiaries and volunteers to encourage engagement with the Sheds activities and support the opportunities that will be on offer.
The Support Worker will also be there to support attendees, encourage progression and guide progress so that beneficiaries gain the most out of the opportunities that will be available, including signposting.
The role will be practical as well as organisational and will involve building up the activities within the Shed and training and recruiting volunteers, mentors and coaches to support the men and those who would benefit from such help, and to build up capacity and sustainability.
The role will include building up relationships and links with local businesses and supporting sustainability for the future.

  • All staff are required to contribute to the successful running of the Lighthouse Project and as such may have to undertake work outside of their designated role to achieve this.

Job Title: Support Worker- (Middleton Men’s Shed)

Brief Description of the Men’s Shed project

Men’s Shed is a workshop style activity aimed at supporting vulnerable and isolated men designed to provide them with a safe place to relax, chat, share their problems and be themselves; it aims to reduce social isolation, build skills and encourage men to thrive.

Tools, equipment, and materials for woodworking, metalwork, bicycle repairs, DIY etc., are provided encouraging men to be physically and mentally active. Participation in creative activities gives men motivation and a practical means of improving their lives.

Men’s Sheds is a proven and effective concept, our Shed will be the first in Middleton and the Rochdale Borough.

Outline of responsibilities.

Operating in the role of a Support worker (Men’s Shed)

  • Working with the Centre manager, tutors and existing volunteers of the Lighthouse Project in the support and delivery of the Community Toolbox activities.
  • Organising and supporting the Men’s Shed activities and publicising services and activities.
  • Working with the tutors and existing volunteers of the Lighthouse Project in support of the Men’s Shed activities.
  • Recruiting participants for the Men’s Shed, identify beneficiaries needs and offering relevant guidance and signposting.
  • Recruitment of volunteers to support the Men’s Shed.
  • Development of volunteer mentors to work alongside and support beneficiaries.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the projects targets, aims and outcomes and providing weekly and monthly reporting to the management team.
  • Development of Men’s Shed activities – and carrying out ongoing research and community needs analysis to support the project and identify any new needs.
  • Networking and development of good partnerships with other local organisations & businesses.
  • Encouraging and motivating the local community to participate in the Men’s Shed activities.
  • Fundraising for any specific project and activity needs.
  • Development of a sustainability plan for the project
