Inserting Tables in your Homework

Below is a table that you can use in your homework assignments. The table should paste without issue into any .doc, .rtf, or .pub.

On Windows: To copy the table, highlight the entire table and do one of the following:

  • On the toolbar, select Edit  Copy. Then go to your file, put the cursor where you would like the table to go, click the Edit menu again and select the Paste option.
  • Or… right-click somewhere on the highlighted area and select Copy. Go to your file, right-click where you would like the table to go and select Paste.
  • Or… use the hot key approach; that is, hit Ctrl + C (this copies the table to your clipboard). Then go to your file, put the cursor where you would like to table to go and hit Ctrl + V to paste the table in.

On a Macintosh: To copy the table, highlight the entire table and do one of the following:

  • On the menu bar, select Edit  Copy. Then go to your file, put the cursor where you would like the table to go, click the Edit menu again and select the Paste option.
  • Or… hold ⌘ and click somewhere on the highlighted area and select Copy. Go to your file, hold ⌘ and click where you would like the table to go and select Paste. (Instead of using hold ⌘ and click, you may use the right-click button if you have a compatible mouse.
  • Or… use the hot key approach; that is, hit ⌘ + C (this copies the table to your clipboard). Then go to your file, put the cursor where you would like to table to go and hit ⌘ + V to paste the table in.

To edit this table, highlight the table then either select the Table button on the toolbar (or menu bar) or right-click on a highlighted area, then select the appropriate options to edit the table. You may add / delete rows, adjust the weight of the lines and borders, redefine both vertical and horizontal alignment in each cell, and much more.

In general, if you would like to add a table on your own, simply use the Table menu on the toolbar (menu bar) and select the Insert menu, then a dialog box with initial table options will appear to help with the formatting of the table. Programs other than MS Word (such as Corel, WordPerfect, Pages) have very similar, if not identical, table behavior, so this same technique should be applicable to those programs if you choose not to use MS Word.
