When students start with a nutritious smoothie for breakfast as part of the school day,

good things happen!

CITY, AR(date in parentheses)—On(day, date), (school name)began offering students fruit smoothies on (day of the week) as a Breakfast After the Bell option.Hungry students have a hard time learning, but teachers and school leaders in schools offering Breakfast After the Bell programs report that their students get to class on time, are more attentive, focused on their classwork and better behaved.Schools are finding that fruit smoothies—made with fat-free milk, fat free yogurt and frozen fruit—are a good way to entice students to fuel up in the morning. They can grab a nutritious smoothie and enjoy it in their first class or between classes.

“Older students present a special challenge to good nutrition,” said Superintendent/Principal/Child Nutrition Director (name). “We’re always looking for ways of improving the school experience for all of our students, and the Fruit Smoothies seemed like a good way of doing that,”she continued. “This was a no-brainer. With the grant we received from Midwest Dairy Council and technical assistance from the Arkansas No Kid Hungry campaign, it costus little or nothing to get started and it promises important academic and nutritional benefits for our students.”

The Arkansas No Kid Hungry campaign and Midwest Dairy Council haveworked with many schools to add Fruit Smoothies as part of their Breakfast After the Bell programs. Child nutrition directors, principals and superintendentssay overwhelmingly that the program is easy to implement and maintain and has positive effects for students.
