Injury Matters

Injury Matters aims to empower, influence and collaborate with the WA community to prevent injury and support recovery, because it believes all Western Australians can live life uninterrupted by injury. Injury Matters delivers three flagship programs that aim to prevent injury and support recovery, including Stay On Your Feet®, Road Trauma Support WA and Know Injury.

Know Injury

Know Injury aims to enhance the capacity of practitioners and organisations to deliver evidence informed activities by providing knowledge, training, resources, and networking opportunities to help prevent injuries in Western Australia. To do this, Know Injury works with Local Governments, health workers, not-for-profit and community organisations to Know, Learn and Connect:

  • Know about when, where, why and to whom injuries occur
  • Learn how to adopt a public health approach to preventing injuries
  • Connect with other people and organisations working to prevent injuries in Western Australia

Know Injury is provided by Injury Matters and funded by the State Government through the Department of Health.

Injury Prevention Summit 2017

Know Injury will deliver the Injury Prevention Summiton Thursday 23 November 2017 at Parmelia Hilton Perth. The Summit will provide an opportunity to bring together injury prevention practitioners from all over Western Australia to highlight current directions, trends and practice in injury prevention, and network with likeminded individuals. Leaders in the field will discuss priority populations in injury prevention, child injury, youth injury, older adult injury, road safety, community approaches to suicide prevention, and community approaches to reducing alcohol related harm and violence in a series of expert panel sessions.Summit attendees will have the opportunity to engage in group discussions and ask questions of the expert panels. The Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion Awards breakfast will also be held on the morning of the Injury Prevention Summit.

Know Injury will be offering regional travel grants for injury prevention and safety promotion practitioners living in regional and remote Western Australia to attend the Injury Prevention Summit. Grants up to the value of$1000 dollars (including GST) are available, depending on geographical location. The grants will be awarded to assist with travel and accommodation expenses. Registration costs and any additional expenses will need to be met by the attendee/organisation.

Am I eligible for a grant?

Applications are open to all professionals working in regional and remote Western Australia, who meet the eligibility criteria and wish to attend the Injury Prevention Summit. This can include, butis not restricted to, individuals working for WA Country Health Services, Local Governments and other health and injury prevention organisations.

To be eligible for a grant, applicantsare required to meet the following criteria:

  • Work and reside outside the Metropolitan area of Perth in one of the WA regions including Kimberley, Pilbara, Mid-West, Wheatbelt, South West, Great Southern and Goldfields.
  • A professional working in health promotion, public health, population health, allied health, community development, community safety, crime prevention, aboriginal health, policy or primary care.
  • Work on injury prevention, safety promotion or community safety within their current role.
  • Be a member of, or join, the Know Injury Regional Network Group (
  • Be a member of, or join, the Know Injury CONNECT.ed networking program (

What can I use the money for?

Regional Travel Grant funds may only be used for the following:

  • Accommodation up to $150 per night, maximum 2 nights
  • Airfare costs, or
  • Car mileage for travel associated with attending the event (66 cents per km)

Funds may not be used for any other expenses, including food or personal expenses.

What happens when I receive a grant?

Successful grant recipients will be notified the week of Monday 9 October. Recipients will need to invoice Know Injury for the approved amount and then the money will be paid to the allocated organisation’saccount.

Grant recipients will be responsible for booking their own travel (flights) and accommodation. Please keep all receipts as they will need to be provided in the acquittal.

Applicants are responsible for registering and paying for attendance to the Injury Prevention Summit and Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion Awards Breakfast.

Acquittal

The grant acquittal is due Friday 8 December 2017. If the acquittal is not received within this time it may hinder your opportunity to receive future grant funding. The acquittal is mandatory and must include:

  • Completed Statement of Expenditure form (provided)
  • Original receipts / tax invoices / booking confirmations (must include ABN and organisation details)
  • Completed grant recipient evaluation form (provided)
  • A 200 word blog on your experiences at the Injury Prevention Summit

An overview, article or photos relating to your use of the funds to attend the event are encouraged.

Funds and GST not spent must be returned to Know Injury with the grant acquittal by Friday 8 December.

  • Regional Network Group November meeting (morning of Friday 24 November)

If you are unable to attend one of these events please indicate on your application form. Higher consideration will be given to those who can attend all events.

  • In addition to the acquittal, grant recipients will be required to provide the following:
  • A 10 minute presentation (PowerPoint included) detailing the injury prevention projects that you are working on in your region, to be presented at the Regional Network Group meeting on Friday 24 November.
  • It is a requirement of receiving the grant that all of the grant money is used for eligible costs associated with attending the event. Funds and GST not spent must be returned to Know Injury with the grant acquittal byFriday 8 December 2017.
  • If you do not attend the Injury Prevention Summit, all monies must be refunded to Know Injury.
  • All recipients are required to acknowledge Know Injury, Injury Matters and the Department of Health, for their funding support where appropriate on any form of publication.

Criteria for assessing eligible applications

Grant applications will be assessed independently by an Injury Matters staff member and an external representative using an assessment matrix based on your responses in the application form, particularly the ‘statement of merit’. The name and organisation of the applicant will be removed to reduce the likelihood of bias occurring in the assessment process.
