The Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) Coordinator is the key liaison within Northern College who enables experience-based learning opportunities for our students. These valuable learning opportunities are facilitated through the incumbent by connecting students and faculty with the appropriate internal and external stakeholders and coordinating relevant systems and structures to ensure expectations are clear and outcomes are measurable.

These learning opportunities are defined by their applied, immersive and hands-on nature helping our students gain the valuable skills and competencies required for career success by either embedding them in an industry setting, or delivering industry experiences to the classroom. Student reflection on the learning experience itself will be facilitated by the incumbent’s faculty counterparts with the aspirational goal of personal and professional growth and development. This is a key role with Northern’s position as a market leader in experience-based education and as an advocate of the transformational value of industry-focused learning partnerships. WIL opportunities include, but are not limited to, in-industry field placements, on-campus field placements, volunteer opportunities, industry relevant and in- class projects, and applied research opportunities.

DUTIES: Reporting to the Associate Dean of Tech and Trades, the incumbent is responsible to:

  • advocate for WIL by promoting these opportunities and fostering relationships with appropriate industry partners and internal stakeholders;
  • coordinate in-industry and on-campus field placements and work-integrated learning activities for all applicable Northern College programs;
  • plan, implement and monitor field placements as well as coordinate with Provincial and Federal Employment Access systems (eg. Employment Options, MiHR, etc.) to ensure students and employers are matched suitably;
  • communicate between employers, students and faculty to facilitate these placements;
  • facilitate on-campus activities (eg. guest speaking engagements, outreach events, projects, applied research, etc.), the incumbent will collaborate with the appropriate academic leadership and program faculty, as well as external contacts, to ensure planning and implementation of the internal experiential learning opportunities;
  • plan and oversee special events to promote industry partnerships and field placement opportunities as well as communicates employment opportunities to students on an ongoing basis. This includes leading STEM-specific career fairs and employer on-campus recruitment visits, as well as aiding in the facilitation of career fairs and recruitment in non-STEM specific fields; and
  • work with the Academic Deans/Associate Deans to select students for internal and external awards, scholarships and bursaries and will communicate these opportunities directly to students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum requirements:

  • Three year diploma/degree in Engineering Technology, Business Administration, Human Resource Services, Marketing or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Critical thinking and analytical experience
  • 5 years experience:
  • within a post-secondary setting
  • job development and employment preparation
  • knowledge of North Eastern Ontario Labour Market needs
  • Proven flexibility, cooperation and willingness to share ideas and information to enhance team building with others
  • Must be highly organized and able to prioritize events, students, industry partners and faculty
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Some marketing and public relations skills to reach out to potential industry partners
  • Experience, knowledge and understanding of working effectively in a diverse environment
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a large case load while balancing other duties with deadlines and conflicting priorities

Proof of valid WHMIS/WHMIS Review card is a requirement for employment with Northern College.
