Ingham GSRP Advisory Council Meeting

January 16th, 2015

  1. Welcome and Introductions
  • Cancelling the February Advisory Council meeting due to an extended meeting in January.
  1. Ingham Great Start Collaborative
  2. Meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 1:00 to 3:00, Meets at Grace United Methodist Church on Mt. Hope and Boston Blvd. in Lansing MI
  3. See GSC and other workgroup meetings.
  4. Email Wendy Boyce to be added to the Great Start Collaborative Listserv
  • County wide body of members that are active in early childhood services.
    (Power of We- Focus on children of all ages
    GSC is the early childhood subgroup of Power of We (see Ingham County Power of We Diagram for all partners-attached)
  • Comment: “many district principals don’t know enough about GSRP, how can we raise awareness among principals”
  • GSC is working on this by going to SE director meetings, Principal meetings, and other key leadership meetings within IISD
  • GSRP staff have made presentations to school boards and GSC can support that
  • Request made to have more K-3 staff participating in GSC
  • Strategic Plan Presentation
  • Closing the loop on what we started in January (presented Systems scan at 4/14 GSRP Advisory Council)
  • Survey was given to answer questions on characteristics of the system
  • Systems Scan is complete (over 25 groups surveyed)
  • Wide variety of people, families schools, other groups.
  • Collected qualitative data and quantitative data. Common themes pulled out and turned into headlines, data was prioritized (root cause analysis) “Why is this happening?
  • See 2014-2015 Ingham Action Agenda Summary for a summary of final strategic plan (attached) Entire strategic plan was available during the meeting for anyone who wanted to view it
  • Family Coalition participation Follow Up
  • MC Rothorn discussed family coalition during November GSRP Advisory Council meeting(this is part of strategic plan)
  • East Lansing set up a parent night to discuss language, behavior, literacy and math support with the help of the Family Coalition
  • Posting 4 Early Childhood Outcomes in offices and in Classrooms or where ever you want other people to see the information. Helps to create awareness
  • School Readiness
  • Will be taking a look at Kindergarten Readiness Survey
  • What are the things GSC needs to focus on to get children and families ready for school
  • Next meeting Thursday January 29th from 4:00-6:00 at Harley Franks Early Childhood Center
  • Looking for a wide variety of perspectives
  • GSRP, K-12, Families, etc. invite anyone you feel would like to participate

IISD Updates

  • Wendy showed the recruitment table display
  • IISD has multiple recruitment kits, please contact Wendy Boyce to reserve a kit for your outreach services
  • Wendy B. is available to help out at a recruitment event
  • Potter park zoo days, health fair, health expo, Lansing Showcase events to be done this year.
  • IISD also has a variety of print materials that can be put out.
  • Medical facilities, second hand stores, hair salons, garage sales etc are receptive to putting our materials

  • Corrie Mervyn reviewed the 15-16 Joint Application Process and 15-16 Application and Enrollment Flow Chart- See attached.
  • Notables: Comments on Program preferences are important to indicate as it will allow the family to be routed to their preferred program faster
  • Updating Application status. Sites need to update status on application in real time through
  • out. GSRP is required to enroll based on a prioritization schedule. To show that this is being done we need to show when children are enrolled.
  • Ensure that families know that the prioritization process is the same in every district.
  • Communication Templates
  • Groups worked on communication and shared ideas of what needs to be included.
  • 2015-16 Community Needs Assessment and Application- Due to the state on Feb 19th
  • Data Needed from Programs
  • Corrie shared snapshot from MDE grant website on what needs to be reported and what information we are collecting from each district
  • Will use MSDS submissions all our schools 3 yr trend on K students at different income levels
  • Agreement will be used by all ISDs so that there is a consistent way to determine data.
  • Additional data will be asked of the districts on child care and transportation options available
  • CNAA data collection form was shown. To be sent out as a link to a survey in an email.
  • Process to Choose Subrecipients and Award Slots
  • Groups worked together to review the current protocol for slot distribution and the state guidelines.
  1. Early Childhood Specialist Updates
  • Next PD opportunity on February 20th PD ½ day pd on engaging parents in GSRP.
  • May be contacting sites to do a short video on how to engage parents.

  2. Coming together for Children Conference on Valentines Day 8:30-2:30 $55/registration. Go to cmaeyc.com to register
  3. CMU 2nd annual conference on student teachers as researchers. Feb 6th Free
  4. MCECC conference closed early this year. MDE looking into other venues across the state with the same sessions so that more staff can attend.
  5. Holt is looking for a formal staff evaluation tool for early childhood.
  6. State has revised the core competency piece for staff evaluations. Will be released soon. Can be used for evaluations or personal professional growth and development. Send an email to David Gutierrez with additional
