Information Sheet of MASKING COMPOUND

Description

Masking Compound is an air drying organosol, which is applied for masking (hiding) the areas of metal parts that are not to be electroplated? It is also used for decorative purpose. It can also be used to provide the temporary protection to the metal objects like tools & gears from rusting & corrosion. Masking Compound can be applied to any surface which is not attacked be solvents. It has sufficient adherence to metal surface to enable it to withstand the acids in electroplating plants. It can easily be peeled off after it has served its purpose of masking, decoration or protection. It can easily be used in the chromium & nickel plating purpose.

Technical Specification

Product : Masking Compound (Organosol)

Colour : Translucent - Blue

Viscosity : 90 sec min (Highly volatile, if left open)

(Ford Cup B4 at 30 deg)

Typical Film Thickness : 40 Microns Min

Curing Temp : Room Temperature

Curing Time : a) Surface Dry : 20 Minutes min

b) Hard Dry : 60 Minutes min

c) Forced Dry : 5 to 10 Minutes at 80 deg Celsius

Thinner : Mandatory to use with Masking Compound. Use EXTENDER- MC.

Application

To adjust the viscosity of the Masking Compound, as in the case of paints, always use EXTENDER – MC.

Masking Compound can be applied by either by spraying, dipping or brush application.

Clean the surface from dust & dirt properly where the coating has to be done.

The thickness of the film is minimum in spray, then in brush and thickest in dipping.

Apply the process that you require and obtain the desired thickness of coating by applying one, two or more coats.

At sharp edges extra coats are recommended by brushing in one direction. (Do not apply back and forth action in brushing.)

Between each coat the drying time should be given as above, for the film to cure.

The final coat should be air dried for at least 1 to 2 hours before using the article for electroplating.

If the masking compound has overlapped the on areas to be plated then use a sharp knife or blade to cut the film of the masking compound at the plating line. Peel the film from the palatable area so cleared. Avoid any tearing action, which may loosen the coating from the adjacent areas.

Packing

Masking Compound is available in 10 liters & 20 liters New M.S Drums with barrel neck

EXTENDER – MC is available in 1 liter, 5-liter tin container with screw cap.

Storage

Organosols are highly volatile compounds and have tendency to thicken (i.e. increase in viscosity) and therefore the Drums coating it should be stored in cool & dry place. It should be kept away from heat, humidity and direct sunlight and flame.

Shelf Life

3 (Three) months from the date of manufacture under normal conditions

Precautions

1. There should not be any seepage of water into the drums containing masking compounds. It should be kept in closed containers

2. Being highly volatile the masking compound should be used sufficiently away from the heat and flame.
