POSITION: Senior Managing Editor (Best Practice: Journal Market Positioning)

DEPARTMENT: Medicine Journals

HOURS: Full-time

LOCATION:New York, NY or London, UK

REPORTS TO: Publisher –Medicine Journals

GENERAL OVERVIEW:

The Senior ME in charge of Journal Market Positioning will be tasked with optimizing visibility and usage marketing tactics from an Editorial perspective. In addition, the Senior ME will guide the Medicine team knowledge and use of Good Publication Practices and abstracting and indexing services. In addition, The Senior ME oversees the MEs and EA in their daily management of all aspects of the assigned list of journals, as well as ensuring that their own portfolio is run in an efficient and profitable fashion.

Supervisory Functions

  • Oversee Editorial Assistant and Managing Editors in daily management of all aspects of their respective journals, being the primary contact and available for feedback, meetings, guidance, and support.
  • Act as key Medicine resource for assisting MEs in dealing with issues of ethical misconduct – be familiar with GPP-2 and COPE guidelines and assist with Editor education
  • Work closely with Publisher and Managing Editors to coordinate Instructions for Authors standardized template across all journals in portfolio
  • Understand how A&I services affect journal usage and propose a plan for making sure journals are included in the proper services
  • Understand how readers utilize journal content and propose ideas for increasing usage and citations based on findings
  • Work with Managing Editors to maintain editorial budgets and costs for all journals, maximizing productivity
  • Submit monthly report summarizing Journal activities and highlighting important issues for attention of Management

Assigned Journals

  • Serve as primary liaison between each EIC and internal Marketing, Production, Customer Service, and Accounting departments
  • Work with the EIC to identify the Journal aim, scope, direction to ensure that the established goals are being met. If goals are not met, work toward change.
  • Ensure that EIC is meeting production schedule, page budget, and editorial quality standards
  • Develop and ensure Editor and Editorial Board succession plan, recruiting new EICs as necessary
  • Draft contracts and addendums as necessary
  • Prepare Publisher’s Reports as necessary
  • Attend appropriate conferences and present Publisher’s Reports at editorial board meetings as required
  • Negotiate and maintain society relationships
  • Work with Sales department to conceive and propose supplemental and special issues

EXPERIENCE:

•3 years of experience in publishing or science-related field

EDUCATION BACKGROUND:

  • College Degree required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Interest and/or experience in medicine or science-related fields
  • Excellent writer and communicator
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to changing priorities
  • Extremely organized and detail oriented
  • Strong team player / ability to work with variety of personalities
  • Self-starter, ability to prioritize on daily basis
  • Excellent grammar and spelling
