Name: ______

1.  In your own words, explain what an inference is.

______

2.  Why is this skill important to know? How can using inferences

______

______

3.  Read the 2 paragraphs. What do you think is happening in each paragraph? Write down your inferences in the space provided.

a)  David never thought he would end up here. It was dark, cold and damp. In fact, it smelled moldy and mildewy. Something flew past him at such speed that he yelled and ducked. David couldn’t wait to get out of this pit. After the annual flyby, he ran up the steep, wet cliff until he saw daylight. David decided he would never walk down into that hole again.

______

b)  Spring can be a miserable time. My chores are so exhausting that I sometimes cry. With this one particular chore, my muscles ache because of the pressure I have to put on the handle. Blades are flying, making a huge roaring sound. It’s not fair that I get stuck with this job where I end up getting really dirt and green!

5.  As you read today, see if you can find a spot where an inference is made. Mark the spot. There will be 5 minutes at the end of class to share your results and perhaps a treat!
