Industrial Revolution: Ornament Project Instructions Name ______

To get started,

1.  Type www.julieoverby.pbworks.com in to the URL

2.  On the FrontPage of the wiki, click on “Grade 8 Social Studies”.

3.  On the “Grade 8 Social Studies” page, click on “Industrial Revolution”.

4.  On the “Industrial Revolution” page, click on “Ornament Project”.

On the “Ornament Project” page there are three examples, one for each side of the ornament. They look like this:

On the same page, there are also three templates which you will download to insert pictures and text.

I. To complete “TEMPLATE 1: Person & Signature”, you will need to:

1.  Find a picture of the face of the person, whose invention or reform you are researching, and “save image as” to your P Drive.

WARNING: If you copy and paste the person’s photo in the template without saving it first as an image, the image may be gone the next time you open up the template.

2.  Open “TEMPLATE 1 Person & Signature” on “Ornament Project” page of Mrs. O’s wiki.

3.  Locate the image where you save it in your P drive. Copy and paste it into the Template 1.

4.  To get the picture into the center circle, right click on the picture. From the drop down menu, click on “text wrapping”, then “in front of text”.

5.  Size the picture once it is in the circle. To change the size, use the bottom right “handle”. The picture should not go over the inner circle border.

6.  Do a search to find the person’s signature. Right click and copy the person’s signature and paste it into the lower box on Template 1.

IF you cannot find their signature, type in their first and last name instead, using Baskerville Old Face” as the font style or another font that is easy to read and fits the Industrial Revolution era.

7.  Use the bottom right “handle” to increase or decrease the size of the signature or name so that it fits within the box.

8.  Center the name within the box. To do this, highlight the person’s name and click the center icon in the menu bar within the “Home” tab.

9.  Bold the person’s signature or name by highlighting the name and clicking the “B” in the menu bar or holding down “CTRL” and “B” on the keyboard.

10.  Print off Side 1 of the Ornament.

II. To complete “TEMPLATE 2: Picture Title Year of Invention or Reform”, you will need to:

1.  Find a picture of the invention (if you chose the name of an inventor) or a picture representing the reform (if you chose a reformer) or a picture presenting something founded (if you chose the name of a founder), and “save image as” to your P Drive.

2.  Open “TEMPLATE 2 Picture Title Year of Invention or Reform” on “Ornament Project” page of Mrs. O’s wiki.

3.  Locate the image where you save it in your P drive. Copy and paste it into the diamond-shaped box in Template 2.

4.  To get the picture into the center circle, right click on the picture. From the drop down menu, click on “text wrapping”, then “in front of text”.

5.  Size the picture once it is in the box. To change the size, use the bottom right “handle”. The picture should not go over the border.

6.  Type the name of the invention in the top rectangular box. Highlight the invention’s name and increase or decrease the font size so that it fits within the text box. Make font as large as possible.

7.  Under the “Home” tab, change the font style to fit the Industrial Revolution time period. The style should be easy to read at a glance. Recommendation: “Baskerville Old Face”.

8.  Center the name of the invention within the box. To do this, highlight it and click the center icon in the menu bar within the “Home” tab.

9.  Bold the name of the invention by highlighting the title and clicking the “B” in the menu bar or holding down “CTRL” and “B” on the keyboard

10.  Type the year the invention was invented in the bottom rectangular box.

11.  Change font size and style, bold and center the year (see #’s 6-9 above).

12.  Print off Side 2 of the Ornament.

III. To complete “TEMPLATE 3 Informative Writing”, you will need to:

1.  Open “TEMPLATE 3 Informative Writing” on “Ornament Project” page of Mrs. O’s wiki.

2.  Type in your first name in the small box at the top. Change the font size and font style, accordingly. Bold and center name.

3.  Type in your last name in the small box at the bottom. Make all the required changes mentioned in #2.

4.  Type in your edited information in the center box.

Ø  Use the same old-fashioned font style that you used previously.

Ø  The font size should be 14 or 16.

Ø  Text should be bolded.

Ø  The margins should be “left-margin justified” with indented paragraphs.

5.  Print off Side 3 of the Ornament.

IV. Completing the Ornament.

1.  Use a colored pencil or crayon to color the “frame” of each side of the ornament. Do NOT color within any text box or picture circle or box.

2.  Use the color that matches your industry (agriculture, communication, manufacturing, transportation) or person (founder or reformer):

Agriculture/Farming / Green
Communication / Orange
Founder / Purple
Manufacturing (textiles) / Yellow
Reformer / Red
Transportation / Blue

3.  Once colored, cut out each side of the ornament.

4.  Glue the ornament together. Glue vertical ½ sides together. Will be demonstrated.

5.  Paper punch ornament for hanging.

6.  Hand in for credit.
