Collection Statement

The East Asian Collection has an agreement with Monash University, under the auspices of ALIM (Asian Libraries in Melbourne), where the University of Melbourne Library contributes $8000 per annum for purchasing Korean language materials to support the study of Asian architecture (China, Japan and Korea), and other Korea-related topics taught and researched at the University of Melbourne. The Korean language materials are kept in the Monash Library as the Korean Collection. University of Melbourne staff and students have access to all the materials in the Korean collection and are supported by a Monash-funded specialist Korean studies librarian.

The Korean collection undertakes to purchase all undergraduate prescribed texts and recommended reading titles, and materials identified for Masters by coursework programs. Research level materials are selected in conjunction with members of the academic staff, and from recommendations from students and key library staff.

Materials in the Korean collection are available for semester loan to the University of Melbourne Library to support the teaching of Korea-related subjects.

Formats

No specific format is excluded from the Korean collection. The main type of sources comprise monographs, journals, CD ROMs, newspapers in print, scrolls, manuscripts, microform and electronic databases in Korean language, with Korea as the subject.

Language

The primary language of the collection is Korean, but English-language Korean studies materials are also purchased.

Locations

The Korean collection is housed in the Asian Studies Research Collection, Monash University Library.

Strengths / Intentions

The Korean collection is the largest academic collection in Australia and has a collection focus on social sciences, particularly economics and politics, and on the history, language, architecture, law and music of Korea. It presently contains around 15,000 titles (in Korean and Non-Korean language materials), which comprise:

Monographs Korean language 8,750

Monographs Non-Korean language 4,705

Periodicals 464 (in Korean and non-Korean language)

Audio-visual 1055 (in Korean and non-Korean language)

Areas of the collection that have been developed especially to support teaching and research at the University of Melbourne are architecture and law. The Korean collection continues to monitor changes in Korea-related teaching and research needs at the University of Melbourne to develop in relevant areas or build in new areas where there is little or no coverage.
