- Dutch founded New Netherland in 1613 as fur trading post along the Hudson River
- New Amsterdam – capital of New Netherlands was center of fur trade. Today it is New York City
- Peter Stuyvesant led the colony from 1647-1664.
- Patroons – a person that was given large land grants if they brought 50 settlers. A patron was given fishing and fur trading privileges.
- Diverse Society – Puritan dissenters, German Lutherans, French Protestants, and Jews.
- English saw the Dutch as a threat to their colonies in the north and the south
- English captured colony in 1664 and renamed it New York.

- Excellent harbors were great for trade and large cities such as New York City and Philadelphia became centers of trade.
- Merchants who lived in these cities exported grains, crops and imported manufactured goods from England
- Middle colonies had good climate and rich soil to grow crops.
- German farmers brought knowledge and produced an abundance of cash crops such as, fruits and vegetables.
- Also grew Staple crops, crops that are always needed (Cereal grains - wheat, barley, and oats)
- Indentured servants were a large source of labor.
- There were slaves but not as many as the southern Colonies
- Trade to Britain and the West Indies was important to the economy of middle colonies.
- Diverse populations brought many skilled artisans who worked with steel, glass, furniture, and kitchen ware.
