TEMPORAL BONES
INDICATIONS: WithOut: Cholesteatoma, tinnitus, hearing loss, otalgia, otitis media
With: Tumor, unable to have MRI
PATIENT PREP: WithOut: No Prep
With: NPO for solid foods, water only, for 4 hours prior to scan
IV CONTRAST: WithOut: None
With: 80mL Isovue 370 @ 2.0 mL/second.
ORAL CONTRAST: None
POSITIONING: Head First Supine. Position head to superimpose the base of the skull and acanthion.
TOPOGRAMS: Lateral
SCAN TYPE: Spiral/Helical
NOTES: Scan BilateralEars – Do Not Send Bilateral to Stentor. Reconstruct Each Ear Separately – Then Send Each Ear to Stentor.
If performing Temporal Bones With contrast, reconstruct Axials of each ear in Both Bone and Soft Tissue windows. Send Both the Bone and Soft
TissueAxials, withthe Coronal and Sagittal Bone Recons to stentor. If requested by the radiologist, performoptional recons in Soft Tissue.
ALARA – Keep radiation dose As Low As Reasonably Achievable.
