Independent Reading Project Possibilities

Independent Reading Project

Directions: Hopefully you have enjoyed your Independent Reading book. Although you did not have many requirements or restrictions for the choosing of this book, you should have picked a seventh grade, appropriate chapter book that you had not ever read before. Additionally, you were asked to stay away from comic-style books as well. Now it is time to concentrate on the final project for your Independent Reading book. Below you will see four options for acceptable final projects. You need only pick one, but make sure you follow the directions exactly. If you have questions, or if you are confused about anything, see me immediately. You will have Thursday, October 8th and Friday, October 9th to work in class on your final project. Your final Independent Reading project will be due at the end of the period on Friday, October9th.

Independent Reading Project Possibilities:

Character Wanted: Using a half sheet of poster paper, make a "WANTED" poster for one of the characters or objects in your book. Include the following: (a) a COLORFUL drawing or cut out a picture of the character or object from a magazine. This picture should be size-appropriate to the rest of the poster. If you do not think of yourself as an “artist,” using a COLORFUL picture from a magazine or the computer is suggested; (b) a complete physical description of the character or object. This should not be limited to height, weight, hair or eye color. Rather, include the author’s characterization tools---found on your orange Characterization graphic organizer; (c) the character's or object's misdeeds (or deeds). In other words, what is this character wanted for? What good have they done OR what crime have they committed? Be specific; (d) other information about the character or object which is important; (e) the reward offered for the capture of the character or object. Feel free to be creative here and not just merely write a large money amount. This I/R Project choice has five very specific parts which all must be completed to get credit.

Novel Test:Make a test for the book you read. Include 10 true-false statements, 10 multiple choice (A, B, C & D) questions, and 10 matching questions. Additionally, include one discussion question and one BONUS question. Each question/statement on the test should be DIFFERENT. You are required to create a test that has THIRTY-TWO different questions or statements about your chosen novel. Each section of your test should have directions---just like when you take a test for me…each section of the test has its own set of directions. After writing the test, provide a SEPARATE Answer Key for your test. I am happy to provide you with a “fake” test example to ensure that you correctly complete your test creation, but you need to see me sooner rather than later for the guidance.

Looking for a computer-based project idea?

Create a “Top 10 Websites”List: Find the top 10 school-appropriateweb sites a character in your book would most frequentlyvisit. Yes, these should be actual web sites. They should also be specific sites that represent your character’s interests as demonstrated through your chosen book. Stay away from generic sites like Wikipedia and search engines like yahoo.com. ADDITIONALLY, include at least a three-sentence explanation for each site that explains why your character likes each of the sites. These explanations should be different from one another. Do not simply write the same explanation over and over again….in fact, do not write the same explanation more than once!

Create a QR Code Book Review: Video yourself giving a one-minute POSITIVE book review of your Independent Reading novel. You will want to include the title of your book, its author, and enough of the storyline that makes people want to read your book (setting, conflict, and possible themes)…..but do not give away the ending. (You may want to research other online book reviews first.) Your book review should be taken seriously. Giggling throughout your video, for example, would not be acceptable. Your video should be distraction free, so do not record yourself with the television blaring in the background or while your younger sibling is pitching a fit in the other room. This video should be made visible with a QR code. In addition to your finished product, you will also turn in a hard copy of your review. DO NOT simply read your hard copy in front of the camera. You may wish to include cue cards that someone can have posted just under the camera to help guide your thoughts. If you are interested in this choice, see me for further video/technology specifics.

Final Note: No matter which project idea you choose, be mindful that you will be graded on presentation, neatness, readability, capitalization, punctuation, spelling, etc. If you pick something that deals with illustrations, make sure your pictures are full of a VARIETY of different colors. Each option has multiple steps that must be completed in order for you to get credit. Read very, VERY carefully over your chosen project choice to ensure you are fulfilling all of the requirements. Again, if you have questions about any of these choices, ask questions TODAY. Do not wait until the last minute and potentially end up turning in something that is incomplete or incorrect!
