VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS
Independent Living Resources (ILR) is dedicated to
helping people with disabilities become more
independent as they set and achieve their own goals.
We serve people with disabilities, and their families
and friends, in the Portland Metropolitan area. ILR
is a non-profit organization which is funded by a
combination of federal grants, state grants, local
grants, private foundations, and individual
contributions.
Our services are provided by both paid staff and
dedicated volunteers. Volunteers are essential to the
continued success of the organization enabling us to
provide quality services without exceeding our budget.
In addition, volunteers have credibility with
consumers simply because they are willing to serve
without being paid.
Volunteers serve in many capacities at ILR, including
the Board of Directors, transcription services, peer
counselors, transportation trainers and teaching. Our
volunteer programs, like all our programs, are
dedicated to diversity and non-discrimination.
ILR management has made a strategic decision to use
volunteer employees even more in the future.
This will allow for cost containment, while remaining
consistent with the Independent Living philosophy. In
addition to recruiting more volunteers, we also intend
to use volunteers to do jobs which had previously
either not been done at all or had only been done by
paid staff. Volunteers will fill positions in the
following areas-peer counseling, publications,
transportation training, transcription,
administration, housing, advocacy, youth/adult
mentorship, technical assistance, attendant registry,
teaching, and fund raising. The new volunteer
programs require a very diverse volunteer population,
to fill these different positions.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer employee
please fill out the attached forms.
