Independent Learning Experience Guidelines

What is an Independent Learning Experience?

The Independent Learning Experience is your individual project.

This project is chosen, designed, carried out, and presented by you. All ILE projects for this class must focus on an area of English Language Arts. Each ILE Project requires ten hours of work time outside of class. The final project should clearly demonstrate your growth in the chosen area and the societal change you wanted to implement.

What are the components of an ILE?

The components of the ILE are listed below:

  1. The ILE Development form: This document is to be completed prior to the start of the project. This is your guide through the project. This document also contains the grading rubric for your project.
  1. The ILE Process Journal: Depending on the nature of your project, you will need to reflect on, analyze, criticize and synthesize the work in a constructive way. You may have to change your original plans in light of circumstances or information. Throughout this process you will need to keep a Process Journal. The Process Journal is a document where you record your progress as you work on the project. It need not be typed or well presented, but should be accurate, honest, and completed regularly to show how your project is developing. This journal will also guide you as your write your Project Reflection.
  1. Project Reflection: The ILE Project Reflection is a 2-3 page reflection paper that details the project in its entirety,
  1. Project Presentation: All completed ILE projects will be presented to the class. Presentations should be three to five minutes long. The project should be presented in a manner that is well suited to the project.
