Y7 ART

Content
Art at Walton-le-Dale is a subject accessible to all and is there to engage, inspire and challenge students, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Students will be introduced to a wide variety of different practitioners and their personal reactions and opinions will be developed so as to support their progression as young artists. All students are given a sketchbook in which they can document and illustrate their creative journey, this is a safe place where they are able to make “mistakes” and develop from them.

In year 7 we complete 3 main projects:

1.  Me, Myself & I: self-portraits using a range of different media including pencil, collage, watercolours and ink. Students will understand the use of Maths when studying the facial features. Students will also explore the work of at least 3 artists including Sara Fanelli, Oliver Jeffer and Quentin Blake.

2.  The Human Body: looking at the whole human form students will draw using a range of media, observe the human form moving and pulling shapes and produce a 3d sculpture in the style of Antony Gormley.

3.  External Influences: this year the current Year 7s have been producing personal responses and driving a project based on War Art inspired by the World War 1 centenary and the artists Sir Stanley Spencer & Arabella Dorman. In the summer term it is the intention to work on a national or international live art brief to encourage further ownership and personal intrigue. The media used is therefore undetermined.

Homework projects are set termly and offer students the opportunity to personally explore different artists, designers and craftspeople and respond to them and their work.

Assessment

The students work is assessed using an assessment grid which is attached into their sketchbooks. By using the assessment criteria students are clearly able to see how and why marks are awarded. Verbal feedback is used regularly in addition to written feedback.

How parents can help

·  Encourage students to draw on a regular basis as this is a skill which develops with practise

·  If possible take students to art galleries to widen their experiences of art, craft & design. The internet is a fantastic resource and many national galleries now offer virtual tours where physically going to a gallery is not possible.

·  Encourage students to discuss different artists, designers, craftspeople and art forms and their personal reactions to it.

·  Pinterest is an online scrapbook which has many, many different artists, designers etc. why not set up an art page together?
