May 2017

Math

In Math this month, we are concluding our math lessons with Topics 12 through 16.Topic 12 is aunit on Measurement, Topic 13 is Two and Three Dimensional Objects, and Topic 14 is Identifying and Describing Shapes.

Students will learn that 2-and 3- dimensional objects can be described, classified, and analyzed by their attributes. Students will make and read a graph. Our new vocabulary words will be same, different, sort, and graph.

Students will identify and describe 2- and 3- dimensional shapes and identify everyday objects that have the same shapes. Our new vocabulary words will be rectangle, side, corner, square, circle, triangle, hexagon, cone, cylinder, sphere, cube, and flat surface.

Topic 14 is Identifying and Describing Shapes, Topic 15 is Position and Location Of Shapes and finally Topic 16 is Analyzing, Comparing, And Composing Shapes.

Students will identify where objects are in relation to other objects. Our new vocabulary words will be inside, outside, above, below, on, in front of, behind, left, and right. Students will compose shapes using smaller shapes. Our new vocabulary will be hexagon,

trapezoid, and parallelogram. We will

use our knowledge of solid figures to find these shapes in our home and school environment. Our new vocabulary will be cylinder, cube, cone, and cube.

Language Arts

This month we are learning the sight wordshave, one, help, every,ask, help, look, very, their, saw, put, out, off, our, day, take, too, show.Please continue to work on these sight words at home. There are several activities to do with sight words on our Kindergarten resources page on our website.

Also in Language Arts, we are substituting phonemes. For example, my word is “dog” and I want to change the /g/ to a /t/. What is the new word? “dot” Your child is enjoying how to manipulate letter and sounds to create new words.

Notes

Kindergarten field day will be

Wednesday, May 31st. The rain date is Thursday, June 1st. Remind your child to dress appropriately...comfortable, active wear...and sneakers! If the sun is very strong that day, you may

have your child come to school wearing sunscreen.

IMPORTANT

There is NO SCHOOL on Monday, May 29 for Memorial Day!

On Monday, June 5th, is Literacy Day. It is a building-wide celebration focusing on literacy. Your child will be bringing home a book of their choice. Please ask your child to show you the book they pick!

On Tuesday, June 6th is Meet Your Teacher Day. Your child will have the opportunity to meet all the First Grade teachers for the 2017-2018 school year. Due to the structure of the school day, students often have different teachers for guided reading, math and/or WIN Time. Teacher assignments will be included with the transportation mailing in August.

The last day of school for the AM class will be Thursday, June 8th. We are dismissing at 11:30. Transportation papers will be sent home closer to the end of the month. The PM class’ last day of school will be Wednesday, June 7th. It will be a normal school day.
