Dr David T. Bailey
Local physician and community leader, Dr. David T. Bailey, died suddenly of a heart attack early Wednesday morning, June 7, 2000, while vacationing with his family at their mountain cabin near Las Vegas, NM. He was 54.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 AM in University Church of Christ with Dr. Eddie Sharp officiating. Burial will be in the Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. The family will receive friends on Friday from 7 PM until 9 PM at the funeral home.
Dr. Bailey had practiced medicine in Abilene since 1973 and had been a leader on the boards of both local hospitals, Abilene Christian Schools, the local Boy Scout Council, and the local chapter of the American Heart Association.
He was president of Abilene Diagnostic Clinic Association and was credited with being instrumental in its growth. He joined the group in January 1995 and was elected president the next month, serving in that capacity ever since.
Bailey was born July 17, 1945, in Albuquerque, NM and moved to Abilene at age 7. He graduated from Abilene High School, Abilene Christian University and the University of Texas School of Medicine in San Antonio, where in 1972, he graduated in the top 10 percent of his class. He completed his residency at Bexar County Hospital in San Antonio. He had been board certified with the American Board of Family Practice since 1978.
He was a member of the Texas Medical Association, Taylor-Jones-Haskell County medical Society, and the American Academy of Family Practice. He received the American Medical Association Physician's Recognition Award four times. He was a past board member and advisory medical director of Disability Resources, Inc., in Abilene, and of the advisory board for the science and mathematics departments at ACU. He was a team physician for Abilene High School and for many years at ACU.
He is survived by his wife, Jill Estes Bailey; four sons – David Todd, Jr., and his wife, Lisa; Will, Benjamin and David Thompson; and one grandson – David Todd Bailey, III. He is also survived by his parents – George and Ela Beth Bailey of Dallas; and one brother – Philip of Katy.
A scholarship has been established in his honor at Abilene Christian Schools, 2550 N. Judge Ely Blvd., Abilene, TX 79601; or Zambia Medical Missions Hospital, 658 E.N. 21st St., Abilene, TX 79601.
