  • R. M. Gwynn Seminar: Thursday 19 September, Old Schools (1823), (Church grounds) at 7.45 p.m.

The Church of Ireland General Synod established a Commemorations Committee, to mark the significant historic centenary dates on this Island between 1912 and 1922. This autumn marks the Centenary Commemoration of the workers ‘Lock-Out’ strike. As a local contribution to this particular commemoration, an evening seminar will be held this month in our Old Schools (1823), on 19 September, beginning at 7.45p.m. The context for this commemoration is the fact that the Rev. R. M. Gwynn, S.F.T.C.D. and his medical doctor wife, Eileen, are buried here in our graveyard. Their very beautiful Celtic-design gravestone is the work of the Irish sculptor, Michael Biggs. “Man of God” is the inscription under R. M. Gwynn’s name and “Friends of the Poor” is the inscription under his wife Eileen’s name. R. M. Gwynn had a significant involvement with the workers during the ‘Lock-Out’. The speakers at this Seminar will be Canon Patrick Comerford (“Gwynn the Priest”), Archbishop Michael Jackson (“Gwynn the Educationalist”) and author and historian Pádraig Yeates, (“The Lock-Out, 1913”). At 7.45p.m., there will be a short commemorative ceremony at the Gwynn grave, prior to the commencement of the Seminar at 8.00p.m. Any person is very welcome to attend this seminar.

  • Parish Financial Scheme: The Select Vestry will be renewing our annual parish Financial Scheme this September. We thank the steering committee of Ruth Gaskin, Ivan Sutton, Arthur Stanley and the current Churchwardens for all their valued behind the scenes advance work and also the parishioners who kindly act as visitors. We are more than conscious of the demands on people in the current economic climate. And yet, we also recognise the courage and resilience that adversity can both strangely and wonderfully also draw out. It is important to emphasize that this is also an opportunity for parishioners to contribute voluntarily their “Time and Talents” in a whole variety of ways which cannot be underestimated.

In order to appoint a successor to Suzanne, please note that an advertisement for application to this position as Rector’s Personal Assistant is now displayed on both out noticeboards and also on our parish website.
