In 2016, I’m ridin’ for a reason!

Dear Friend,

Did you realize that the risk for a cancer diagnosis in our lifetime is 1:2 for men and 1:3 for women? And that an active lifestyle can reduce that risk by as much as 40%? In a world where it feels like many things are out of our control, maintaining an active lifestyle is something each and every one of us can be focused on to make a difference. This year, to challenge myself, I have taken on training for the[route distance]in the Titletown Bike Tour to support the Breast Cancer Family Foundation. The Breast Cancer Family Foundation is a local 501(c)3 non-profit that works to inspire people in our local communities to lead healthy, cancer-free lifestyles through cancer awareness and prevention education.

BCFF focuses on promoting healthier choices in nutrition, physical activity, and lifestyles. The classroom curriculum includes information about all types of cancer; specific facts regarding breast cancer, cervical cancer, testicular cancer, and skin cancer; cancer treatment options; and finally, risk reduction techniques. Their programming includes a blend of an interactive presentation, videos, personal stories, and – a new tool this year – an interactive workbook. All of these strategies are designed specifically to engage students not only in the classroom, but once they are home with their families as well.

Since 2001, the Breast Cancer Family Foundation has provided these presentations to almost 70,000 students and community members in our local area. It costs approximately $6 to reach just one student, and in 2016, their goal is to reach 10,000 students in the NE and Central WI areas. BCFF relies on generous donations from individuals such as yourself to continue their mission.

Students like Destiny share what the BCFF information provides to her:

“Thank you for taking time out of your day to come to our school and talk to us about cancer. It really means a lot to me because my great Aunt Gloria was fighting cancer for a couple of years and she did chemo and radiation, and we didn’t think she was going to live any longer, but she did. Her cancer cleared up. Now my great Uncle Marlin has it and is not supposed to live very much longer. It helped me kind of understand what they have to go through.”
