Hi,

I’m Mary Lopatosky and I am a self-advocate for supported employment. Over the years, I have shared my experience in the workforce with others. I spoke with various leaders of organizations providing services, as well as the leadership at the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVR) and the Department of Labor. My experience has taught me that the words and actions of an individual advocating for their needs, and the needs of others can be a powerful, enlightening learning experience. I found that so often decisions were made without having input from the service recipients, the people who are actually job ready and starting the employment process, as well as those who are already working. I would like to have others have the chance I have to share their experiences and their needs through a grass roots advocacy campaign.

In 2010, I was asked to serve on the Governmental Affairs Committee through NJ APSE and was later elected to their Board of Directors. NJ APSE advocates for advancing equitable employment for individuals with disabilities through building partnerships, offering cutting edge training and conferences, raising awareness at the local and state level, affecting public policy through grassroots efforts and leading Employment First initiatives. As a person using supported employment services, you can help NJ APSE to help you.

By including the voices of the people, you can enrich your own life by enlightening others about your work experience. The only requirement is a willingness to share your ‘story’ with others and to start advocating for legislative decisions that may change if we don’t unite and start having our needs heard by the decision makers. I realize that every individual has his or her own comfort level and that you may not be able to participate in all possible “advocacy alerts”. Every effort, no matter how small, by each individual can make a difference.

Please join me. Your input is valuable and I would like to provide you with additional information on upcoming advocacy activities. Please contact me by e-mail at to help us start a strong Employment Advocacy Group in New Jersey.
