In 1572 Thomas Hind occupied a cottage in Giggleswick at 6d annual rent and was also a tenant of Adam Carrr to whom he paid 5s rent for a cottage and a rood of land. Hugh Sailbank occupied a cottage and barn for 3s to which he had added a parcel of waste land and paid an extra 9d rent. The two agreed to exchange properties and were given licence to do so.

Hugh Sailbank moved himself and his family of up to eight surviving children into the 6d cottage, his wife died in 1597 and Hugh in 1598, his son James lived there in 1602 but after that there is no further information on the family.

Thomas Hind was a newcomer to the parish and appears to have been a property speculator. He had married the widow Katherine Wilson whose daughter Elizabeth had married Roger Carr in 1570 and took over the 3s 9d cottage and barn for which he paid and entry fine of 52s 6d. He obtained a small parcel of ground next to Richard Preston for which he paid 2d rent and planned to build a firehouse upon it.

He

and returned his cottage to Adam Carr. Thomas died in 1594 and his will implies that he had other lands he’d taken from the freeholder Thomas Preston
