Due to our high expectations for our pupils, candidates without the required GCSEs will be expected to take a basic skills test in English and Maths before appointment.

Person Specification

  1. Maths and English GCSEs, with a minimum of two other GCSEs or equivalent qualification, grade A-C

Plus one of the following:

CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Child Care and Education;

or BTEC National Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development;

or NVQ Level 3 in Children's Care, Learning and Development

or the equivalent

  1. Experience of working with children age 0-6
  1. Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  1. Ability to communicate effectively with children and adults both orally and in writing
  1. Demonstrate a sound understanding of the role, in relation to contributing towards the learning outcomes of children age 0–6
  1. Ability to research, plan, prepare, execute and evaluate learning activities for children age 0-6
  1. An ability to motivate and support pupils to learn
  1. Patience and a sense of humour
  1. An ability to manage pupils with a range of educational and behavioural needs
  1. An interest in working with children in an urban multicultural environment
  1. Ability to work in partnership with teachers in the classroom and to co-operate with staff at all levels

Job Description

Designation of post:EARLY YEARS PRACTITIONER

GRADE: Scale 4

Responsible to Headteacher

GENERALLY

  1. To provide high quality education and care appropriate to the development needs of the children, working in partnership with their parents and by external agencies as appropriate.
  1. To ensure that all children are supported to keep safe, stay healthy, achieve and enjoy, make a positive contribution and work towards economic well being.

SPECIFICALLY

  1. To promote the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of children through sensitive planning to each child’s changing needs, but at all times encouraging their independence and self reliance.
  1. In accordance with agreed policies observe, assess and record each child’s progress, discussing any developmental concerns with the appropriate line manager.
  1. On a daily, weekly and termly basis meet the children’s needs and interests by researching, planning, preparing, executing and evaluating particular learning activities.
  1. To work with individuals and groups of children as appropriate to their development, age and interests, supporting their access to a broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated indoor and outdoor curriculum in accordance with the national framework.
  1. To support and value each child’s home culture and language. To contribute to planning for children with English as an additional language to acquire English.
  1. To encourage and support relationships between parents, families, carers and the school/centre so that each child benefits from the shared interest in and knowledge about, their progress. To involve parents/carers in their child’s progress through daily informal contact, record keeping, and attending review meetings as appropriate/reporting on children’s progress.
  1. To contribute towards the provision and sustainability of a stimulating, secure, caring and learning environment that promotes equal opportunities for the children, and their parents, families and carers.
  1. To take responsibility for children in both indoor and outdoor areas, providing appropriate levels of supervision and intervention to progress pupils’ learning.
  1. To utilise the expertise of colleagues and to work in partnership with Council departments and external organisations to meet the needs of individual children as appropriate.
  1. To maintain confidentiality of information about children and their families, sharing sensitive or personal information only with those colleagues who need to know and in line with agreed procedures.
  1. To share responsibility for the presentation of children’s work and the compilation of displays which celebrate achievement, support areas of interest and provide appropriate information.
  1. To administer first aid in accordance with schools health and safety policies (after appropriate training) and to be responsible for recording accidents/incidents and informing other staff and parents. In the case of more serious accidents/incidents refer to named first aider and the appropriate line manager.
  1. To take and accurately maintain registers.
  1. To supervise lunch and other refreshments as required, including dining with children if appropriate.
  1. To work in co-operation with other staff to ensure that resources and equipment are maintained in a clean, safe condition and are stored appropriately. To report any broken, dangerous or missing equipment to the relevant line manager.
  1. To undertake occasional supervision and to participate in the support and training of other support staff i.e., students, trainees and volunteers as appropriate.
  1. To undertake home visits (accompanied by another member of staff), placement visits and contract meetings.
  1. To plan and lead activities that support the development of SEND pupils.
  1. To undertake training, share good practice and attend and participate in staff meetings, planning sessionsand professional training days.
  1. To keep abreast of legislation and practice in the education and care of young children.
  1. In discharging all duties of the post be mindful of the school/centre and Council equal opportunity policy.
  1. To work within the school’s safeguarding policy with particular emphasis on promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children.
  1. To carry out all duties with due regard for health and safety at work regulations.
  1. To undertake any other reasonable duties as directed and commensurate with the level and responsibility of the post.
