Description: This course focuses on those components of pharmacology related to safe nursing care. The course includes information about the general classifications of drugs and principles of therapy related to the effects, actions, and therapeutic use of each drug. Nursing actions and rationale for nursing actions are explored.

Grading: Tests will be given periodically and will include a final exam. Out of class assignments and/or pop-quizzes may be given at any time and may not be announced. THERE WILL BE NO MAKE UPS FOR TESTS or QUIZES. Grading will be based on percentage of points possible. The schedule and total points available may change at the discretion of the instructor, taking into account the progress of students with the materials. The grading scale will follow guidelines as covered in the Associate Degree Nursing (A.D.N.) Program Student Handbook Division of Nursing Education and Health Technologies 2008-2009

A = 92 –100% of points possible

B = 83 – 91 % of points possible

C = 75 – 82 % of points possible

D = 68 – 74 % of points possible

F = Below 68%

Attendance: Attendance –according to the Imperial Valley College Catalog: Regular attendance in all classes is expected of all students enrolled. Instructors are expected to take a student’s record into account in computing grades. A student may be excluded from further attendance in a class during any semester when absences after close of registration have exceeded the number of class hours which the class meets per week. Students who are late to class three times in any nursing course will be considered absent for one day.

Disruptive Behavior: An instructor may drop any student judged to be a disturbing element in the class. Cell phones, pagers and all electronic devices shall be turned off during class. Disruptive behavior during lecture will not be tolerated.

This schedule is subject to change to meet the learning objectives of the course and progress of the students. The instructor has final word in all schedule changes including test dates and make up tests if any. When enrolled in the class you will accept all professional judgments on the day to day running of the class. Any concerns about the class must first be taken up with the instructor. The next person in the chain of command is the Director of the Health Sciences Division. As a student enrolled in this class you will follow all the Regulations covered in the student handbook 2008-2009. Failure to follow these regulations may result in a grade of (F).

ATI Testing: An ATI test in pharmacology may be give during the semester at the discretion of the Nursing Division Committee. The semester. Imperial Valley College Associate Degree Nursing (A.D.N.) Students will need to meet the requirements as decided by the Director of the Health Science Division and Faculty. Failure to complete the requirements for ATI may result in a Failing Grade in the class.

Prerequisite(s): Demonstration of Math Competency; Demonstration of English Competency; English 101; Psychology 101; BIOL 200 and 202 or BIOL 204 and 206;

BIOL 220 with grades of “C” or better and admission to the Nursing program.

Co-Requisite(s): NURS 100; NURS 110; NURS 111; NURS 112.

Please note that if you do not meet the above Prerequisite(s) and Co-Requisite(s) you will be dropped from the class.
