IL1: Access Prep

Library Scavenger Hunt

As we progress in the quarter, you will need to become familiar with our library and its resources. This online scavenger hunt will help you learn how to access information that will come in handy for the rest of the quarter (and the rest of your college career). Pay attention: you will need to use this information repeatedly for the rest of the quarter!

For this assignment, you need:

  • this handout
  • Pen/pencil
  • A computer with Internet access
  • earphones or earbuds
  • TIME to think about what you’re doing, watch a bit of a video, and read and article. I recommend you split this assignment over the next two days. (It’s four pages long, and there are a lot of steps.)

1. Go to: . Bookmark this link or save it as a Favorite: you’ll need it often.

2. Near the bottom of the homepage, click on the 80-second tour link and watch it.

3. During the video, librarian Aryana Bates tells you what the library can help you with. She describes the key points of information literacy. The library is a central information point for you, as are our librarians. Their aim (and mine) is to help you become “informationally literate.” On your information sheets at the beginning of the quarter, many of you stated that you weren’t familiar with the concept of information literacy. Please summarize in 2-3 sentences what Aryana Bates says in the video. Use your own words. You can watch the video as many times as you need to.

4. Go back to the library home page.

5. Click on the librarians link.

 Click on Elinor Appel’s link

 Click on the Library catalog link

 Click on the Course Reserve tab

 Click on the down arrow of the instructor box, then select my name.

7. Click on the Search button.

8. How many hits did your search result in?

9. Skim through the links. Some are for our class, with my last name, and some are for other classes. How many hits do you see that are with my last name?
