We are pleased to organise an educational lecture by Dr Rich Ferrie, Director of Operations at UMIP – the technology transfer Division of UMI3 Ltd. In this role he leads a group of 27 people responsible for identifying, protecting and commercialising intellectual property arising from the University of Manchester. UMIP has a strong record of IP commercialisation which has resulted in a number of high profile companies and licensing deals with major international companies. Previously, he spent 11 years in various scientific and commercial roles with the diagnostics business of AstraZeneca culminating with leadership of its Sales and Marketing function internationally.
A Biochemistry graduate (Sussex), Rich gained a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Reading. After a short period of post-doctoral research with the UK Forensic Science Service, Rich continued his work developing DNA fingerprinting technology at ICI Diagnostics. In 1991, Rich was appointed Technology Development Manager and is an inventor on 4 international patent applications. This work enabled the development of the first commercial cystic fibrosis genetic testing product. Rich then took a senior BD role developing commercial collaborations and relationships with businesses internationally. From 1998 he established and led the Sales and Marketing department of Zeneca Diagnostics and was responsible for the ELUCIGENETM product range.
The University of Manchester is now the UK’s largest single-site University with a total annual income of £802M, of which £270M is derived from external research funding. The University is committed to ensuring that this substantial research effort yields economic and social benefit wherever possible and its strategy and policies encourage its academic staff to embrace entrepreneurship as a worthy and legitimate academic pursuit. This presentation will show how Manchester has developed a unique systematic process and infrastructure dedicated to this agenda which has yielded over 50 new companies and 340 technology licenses since 2004.
