CALL TO ACTION –May 7

(IF YOU ONLY HAVE TIME TO DO 1 THING -DO THIS)

ACTION:Protect the Antiquities Act

Thank our senators for leading a group of Democratic senators in condemning the executive order that threatens the Antiquities Act.

@SenatorCantwell Thank you for defending the Antiquities Act and condemning Trump’s executive order.

@PattyMurray Thank you for defending the Antiquities Act and condemning Trump’s executive order.

Background: Trump’s executive order authorized a review of 27 national monuments with plans to eliminate their protection as monuments. The administration plans to rescind national monument protections to allow mining, oil and gas exploration. Environmental advocates and Western Native American tribes are outraged by Trump’s executive order. Bears Ears in Utah is the first target of the executive order.

ACTION:Thank Denny Heck for opposing the Republican House bill that attempts to repeal the ACA, for his role in passing a budget that does not reflect any of the Trump priorities, and for his opposition to HR10 which would undo key protections of the Dodd-Frank Act.

Send a postcard: Congressman Denny Heck 425 Cannon House Office Building Washington, DC. or 420 College St. S.E. Suite 3000 Lacey, WA. 98503 or 6000 Main Street S.W. Suite 3B Lakewood, WA. 98499. Or call at 1 202-225-9740.

ACTION: Let our Senators know that they must continue their opposition to the Republican House bill to repeal the ACA.

Contact Senators Murray and Cantwell via Twitter @SenatorCantwell and @PattyMurray, or phone call Patty Murray (253) 572-3636 Maria Cantwell (253) 572-2281 to let them know your concern about the bill passed by House Republicans that would dismantle the ACA and provide a tax break for the wealthy. Let them know you support the Senate rejecting the House version, and either doing nothing or crafting bipartisan fixes to the ACA.

Background: Last week, the Republican House members narrowly passed legislation that repeals the ACA, with no analysis by the Congressional Budget Office. This legislation was opposed by the AARP, physicians, hospitals and the insurance industry. Seattle’s Harborview Hospital estimates that it would cost them $627 million per year if it became law. It is a tax cut for those earning over $250k per year, and shifts those costs to the poor by increasing the cost of premiums, increasing deductibles and reducing coverage. It will cost states more, by increasing their share of Medicaid costs over time.

ACTION:CallRod J. Rosenstein (1-202-353-1555), Deputy Attorney General for the Department of Justice, who is in charge of the investigation now that Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from all Trump campaign related investigations.

Your script:Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a concerned citizen from [CITY, ZIP]. I’m calling to ask Mr. Rosenstein to appoint an independent special prosecutor to investigate Russia's involvement with the Trump campaign and the 2016 election. It has become clear that this is the only way we can be guaranteed a fair and full investigation instead of more partisan politics. Thank you for your hard work answering the phones.

Action:

CallSenate Select Committee on Intelligence (1-202-224-1700)

Your script: Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I'm calling to express my concern that the committee is not sufficiently investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 election. The public deserves and expects an investigation that is well staffed with experienced investigators, conducts interviews, issues subpoenas and conducts itself with the highest integrity. Anything less would be a disservice to the Constitution and the American people. Please pass my message along to the Chairman and other members of the committee.

Background: Though US intelligence agencies have stated categorically that Russia attacked the US in the election, it looks like the investigation into this matter is stalled, and even being dismissed by some Republicans. For example, Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley is questioning the legitimacy of the FBI's conclusions, and the Chair of the Foreign Relations Committee has said there will be no new sanctions against Russia even as the investigations are ongoing. Please make your concerns known over these efforts to stall and even dismiss investigations into Russian's influence over the presidential election.
