The Small Charities Coalition offers valuable support through different stages in the life cycle of small charities and promotes their interests at a national level.

The Head of Services is a new post that will support our Chief Executive, and the rest of our small team, in making sure that small charities are supported, empowered and inspired. We are looking for someone who can contribute at a strategic, management level but who is also happy to contribute to the day to day operations of the charity.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to work within a small, yetinfluentialnational membership and infrastructure charity. With ambitious plans for growth in 2018 we are looking for a candidate who could help us:

  1. OVERSEE THE SERVICES WE OFFER TO SMALL CHARITIES

You will manage a very small, and often fluctuating, team of volunteers and staff; ensuring that our services are delivered efficiently and effectively – remaining current, fit for fit for purpose and within the planned budget. The core services and responsibilities are:

  • MENTORING
  • Processing and matching small charities with suitable volunteer mentors.
  • Managing the mentoring database.
  • Account management of mentoring matches
  • TELEPHONE AND EMAIL SUPPORT
  • Recruiting, training and managing volunteers to respond to phone and email enquiries and help request forms e.g. signpost to resources, researching issues.
  • Logging enquiries for reporting purposes.
  • ONLINE RESOURCES
  • Ensuring that our online resources remain up to date
  • Horizon scanning for additional resources our members may require in the future.

You will ensure that we have appropriate monitoring and evaluation systems in place; seeking feedback from members in a manageable and systematic fashion and will work with our Policy and Research Manager from time to time to create membership surveys.

  1. MANAGE THE DELIVERY AND REPORTING OF FUNDED PROGRAMMES

Ensure we deliver against, and keep appropriate records of, the outputs and outcomes of planned activities for funders. Coordinate regular updates/meetings on the progress of programmes and confirm future actions. This will involve the following activities:

  • Manage the delivery of funded programmes.
  • Ensure we deliver against planned activities.
  • Coordinate other staff and volunteers to deliver programmes.
  • Keep records of outputs and outcomes for reporting purposes.
  • Coordinate regular updates/meetings for key stakeholders on the progress of programmes and confirm future actions
  • Work closely with our freelance fundraising on new funding proposals as and when required.
  1. BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE TEAM FOR THE FUTURE

Work closely with the Chief Executive to ensure that we have the right people, with the right skills to deliver against an ambitious new three-year strategy (launching in April 2018).
Operational responsibilities: Recruiting, inducting and managing staff and volunteers for your team as necessary and supporting team members with applying for funding for new roles.

  • Innovative and creative, but highly structured – able to sort the wheat from the (considerable)chaff of what works and creates the greatest impact with the resources we have, or which we canleverage
  • Adaptable to change – able to manage a fluctuating team of volunteers and staff whilst ensuring that services are maintained at a high standard
  • Excellent relationship building and influencing skills, interested in people and able to engage diverse audiences.
  • Strong customer service skills – able to provide a professional and friendly experience to the members that we serve
  • Good organisation, time management and ability to focus on a specific task (as well as multi-tasking)
  • Excellent project management skills
  • High level of competency in and experience of using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a small team
  • Flexible leader: able consciously to adapt leadership style to situation.
  • Analytical approach: excellence in understanding and using data to improve.
  • Honest leader - with self, and with others, in acknowledging what is good, but continually looking to do better. Able to use feedback to improve team and personal performance, engineer change and influence best practice
  • Experience of working within the charity sector is desirable but not essential.
