Activity:

  1. Introduce the lesson with a shared read aloud of the article Metal found in Kindergarten Science, Physical Science – Magnets and Gravity weekly unit.
  2. Ask students if they have used magnets before and where magnets are found. Discuss the different ways that magnets are used today.
  3. Have students look for something they should never do with magnets as they watch the video Magnets. Have students share what they heard in the video (do not swallow or put magnets in your nose) and why that is important.
  4. Prior to the activity make sure students understand the vocabulary words object, attract, prediction, results, and analysis.
  5. In small collaborative groups, have students complete the activity in the article Magnets. Have students use the worksheet at the end of this lesson to track the results of the experiment. Ask each group to share, with the class, their results from one of the objects on which they experimented.

Differentiation:

  • For the activity, images of each object can be printed and cut out prior to the lesson. Students can then glue the image instead of writing the objects name.
  • Students can complete the activity on their own or with a partner.
  • Students can experiment with only one object and then share their findings with the class.

Extension:

  • Individually, or in small groups students will use the app Sock Puppets to create a puppet show about the magnet activity. Make sure students include the results of their experiment in the puppet show.
