If you are being bullied you should:

Tell an adult who can help – a parent, or adult at your GKAC activity

Keep away from the person

Play with other friends

Parents

If your child is being bullied, you should:

Remain calm

Contact the GKAC Project Manager

Reassure your child that they are not to blame

Encourage your child to always tell

If your child has been bullying others, you should:

Talk to them about why bullying is wrong

Find out if they have a new circle of friends

Try to find out if anything has happened to them

Tell you child that you can help

Contact the GKAC Project Manager

Give Kids a Chance will:

Record and investigate all incidents immediately

Aim to reconcile the parties involved

If necessary parents and police will be informed

In serious cases, suspension or exclusion will be considered

Examples of bullying or bad behaviours

Being called names, teased, put down or threatened, being hit, tripped or kicked, having belongings stolen or damaged, being ignored, left out or having rumours spread about you, receiving abusive text messages or emails, being targeted for who you are or who you are perceived to be.

(young people have asked that pictures of good and bad behaviours be included in this leaflet – this will be done)

Examples of good behaviours

Young people being nice to each other – playing together, helping each other – arms round each other – side by side smiling etc, nice positive photographs/drawings.

Signs and effects of bullying behaviour could include young people:

becoming withdrawn

have scratches and bruises that can’t really be explained

don’t want to go to school/ or other out of school activity

don’t want to go out and play with friends

are frightened of walking to or from school / or other out of school activity

suddenly complaining of headaches, stomach aches and other pains

become easily upset, tearful, ill-tempered or display other out-of-character behaviour.
