It is really a matter of pride for all of us.

This year, the Student Branches have organised many conferences, seminars and activities in their colleges/universities. The Student Membership from Delhi Section has increased further. A dozen of new branches have been launched this year at different places resulting into 54 branches in all.

Membership drive, particularly for the student membership, has been taken up, through special activities including quarterly meets, expert talks and industry-institution interaction, organised at different places. Twelve new Student Branches have been launched this year, raising the number to 54 branches. Thefinancial support has been extended to students for encouraging their participation in various IEEE activities like INDICON.

WIE (Women in Engineering) and GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) groups have organised meetings, discussions and seminars. Standing Committees and Chapters have also performed well in their respective activities. Membership Development Committeehas taken a lead to enrol new members. Fellow Nomination and Awards Committee ‘Young Engineer Award’ and other Awards, are announced through e-Newsletter, from time to time. Elevation of eligible members to Senior Member grade has been launched.

The Section has organised 130 technical activities, which is a big achievement of the year. The details of these activities for 2010 are available on the Section website. The topics covered have been in all the subjects from biomedical, IT and computers to management and education.

The Section has sponsored and co-hosted around 20 international and national conferences. Financial support for the publication cost of IEEE Info India Newsletter has been extended to India Council of IEEE-India. The section has represented in various Industry-Interaction Programmes with other societies like Engineer Council of India, IETE, IE (I), Computer Society of India, etc.

Several DL talkshave been organised by the section. Prof. George T. Schmidt of MIT-USA was a special DL who delivered talks during IETE foundation day in association with the Section. Other two Distinguished Lectures on ‘GPS Technology Trends’ were delivered by him at PDM College of Engg, Bahadurgarh and Amity University, Noida.

During the year, a number of distinguished lectures have been organised by the Section. At the time of 125th Year Celebration of IEEE, foreign dignitaries including Dr. Lewis Terman - IEEE President and CEO, Dr. James Prendergast - IEEE Executive Director & COO, Cecelia Jankowski - IEEE Managing Director, Peter Sobel - IEEE Managing Director,Matthew Loeb - IEEE Staff Executive, and other IEEE bodies visited India including Delhi and appreciated the Section’s activities. The meet was attended by Dr. V.R.Singh, Chair, Prof. Mini S. Thomas and other Delhi EC Members. This has also become the history of the Section.

IEEE office for India has been established in Bangalore on October 29, 2010. There was an opening ceremony of IEEE’s office in India on Friday, 29th October, 2010 at Bangalore in the Central Business District building, by IEEE President Pedro Ray. He was accompanied by IEEE Executive Director James Prendergast, IEEE Staff Executive Matt Loeb, IEEE Chief Marketing Officer Patrick Mahoney, IEEE Chief Financial Officer Tom Siegert, IEEE Managing Director of Member & Geographic Activities-Ms Cecelia Jankowski, and Staff Director, Global Business Development, Peter Sobel. All section chairs and IC-chair and secretary were also invited. Dr. V.R.Singh, chair- IEEE Delhi, attended the program.

IEEE- SA expert members had planned to visit Delhi and organise special seminars on Cloud Computing and Smart Grid at JMI and Design Automation at IITD during Feb 2011.

I emphasise on organising of activities related to societal missions, rural development, upliftment of the poor through technology, ubiquitous health care, disaster management, sustainability and global climate change warning, etc.

STUDENT ACTIVITY REPORT by RachanaGarg, SAC-Chair

In 2010, IEEE student branches of Delhi section have reported tremendous growth. From 42 branches in 2009, now we have 54 student branches under Delhi section. 12 new student branches have been opened in Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and NCR region. Consequently the student membership has also gone up significantly.

This year has been very special in the sense that many students of the section have won awards in various national / international competitions.IEEE DTU student branch won the first prize in branch presentation competition in AISC 2010 organised by Bombay sectionwhich was judged on the basis of the events, number of members and presentation skills. In Humanitarian Technology Student Project Design CompetitionGauravMinocha and RidhimaMittal from NetajiSubhas Institute of Technology, India (Region 10) has won Third place and cash prize of $2,000 for their project entitled “Alternate Energy Sources”.In2010 JamiaMilliaIslamia has won the Outstanding Student Branch CertificateR10 award2010.The three student branchesBharatiVidyapeeth College of Engineering,JamiaMilliaIslamia,NetajiSubhas Institute of Technology had won the bronze inIEEE Darrel Chong Student Activities Award 2010.

I am also pleased to see that new student branches are showing lots of enthusiasm in organizing/ attending various activities. BKBIET, Pilani, a newly opened student branch has organized the 9th Quarterly cum GINI meet successfully. The 10th QM cum GINI meet was organized at DTU student branch which has been attended by record number of students. The meet was a huge success. The next QM will be organized again by a newly opened branch, ManavRachana College of Engg., Faridabad. Some inactive student branches, like BITS Pilani has also shown interest in reviving the branch.

Many newly opened student branches has organized their Inaugural Functions which are attended by the dignitaries and office bearers from the section and had encouraged/ motivated the students to join IEEE. In the Inaugural function of Amity Univ. student branch, Prof. Schmitt from USA was the keynote speaker.

Microsoft India has a program called Microsoft Student Partner (MSP). As part of the GINI Industry Relations initiative, Microsoft India is calling for nominations for Microsoft Student Partner(MSP) selection process. Many students from various student branches have taken advantage of this scheme.Microsoft is also organising a national level Quiz competition and many student branches of the section has offered to conduct these quizzes.

Reporting of activities and annual plan is very important for student branches. Timely reminders of such activities were sent to all the student branches so that they submit their forms in time. This year most of the student branches had submitted their reports in time. This has been possible due to being in continuous touch with the students and branch counselors on phone and e-mail. Information about different awards/activities was also sent from time to time so that the students can participate in various competitions and be made aware about the activities of IEEE.
