Save the Date

Let’s celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month! On Monday, September 16thour Academy students will be allowed to wear an outfit to represent our neighbor to the South. Please make certain the outfit is comfortable for your child to be in all day. You can also provide a change into their uniform. We’re looking forward to seeing all the bright shiny faces.

Monthly Awards

The school year is well under way and our students are already showing us what amazing Owl Scholars they are. At the end of every month this school year we will be hosting an Owl Awards Assembly to celebrate all student accomplishments for that month. Please make sure you are here to share in your child’s achievements. We will be sending out specific information as the Assembly nears.

PRINCIPAL MESSAGE

Open Door:

Thursdays from 2-4

EveryThursday Principal Arismendi and Principal Polites host ‘Open Door’ from 2pm-4pm. During this time, students’ family members are invited to stop by our campus to observe classrooms together and learn more about our curriculum. Please reach out to Monique Suarez, Administrative Assistant, at 210.620.2459 to save a spot!

Average Daily Attendance

Our goal for attendance is 98% every day. We strive to reach this goal every day because when your children are in school, they are learning. You can help us achieve this by bringing your child to school every day. We understand that emergencies and illnesses happen and we are here to support you. What 98% attendance means for your child: Your child should not be absent more than three school days a year. Our commitment to your child’s success is strong, and we can accomplish this goal together with you!

ACADEMIC CORNER

Checking Planners and Lifework

Your support is greatly appreciated by checking your scholar’s planner nightly to ensure that your scholar has completed all lifework. If your scholar has any questions regarding lifework, (s)he should call his/her teachers for assistance before 8:00pm. (S)he has written down all teachers’ phone numbers in their planners.

PowerSchool access – viewing grades online

Pretty soon, your scholar will receive his/her username/password to access their grades on PowerSchool, our online grading system. More information to come your way!

What is West Wing?

Students serve West Wing when they do not complete a lifework assignment. Instead of going to recess, students remain in a class with Ms. Guzman, our Academic Counselor, in order to complete their incomplete lifework. Once students complete their lifework, they rejoin their classmates at recess. In order to avoid having your child attend West Wing, please check his/her daily planner to ensure that all lifework is complete. In addition, all students have written their teachers’ phone numbers in their planners. If you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns regarding a particular lifework assignment, please contact our teachers, so they can assist you. We stress the importance of completing lifework daily in order for us to continue along our journey in closing the achievement gap.

OPERATIONS CORNER

New Front Gate Procedure

Our front gate is now fully operational! With the installation of a call button and video camera comes a new process for entering the school grounds. When you drive up to the main entrance on South Flores, you will need to pull up to the speaker box and push the button to speak with the receptionist. The receptionist will ask you to:

  1. State the purpose of your visit
  2. Display your photo ID to the camera
  3. Park in the front lot

To listen to the receptionist, you will need to release the button. This procedure has been designed to ensure the safety of our children. If you have any questions or concerns, please speak with the receptionist at the front office.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Our IDEA South Flores campus has plenty of volunteer opportunities. During our Meet the Teacher night, some of you signed a background check authorization form to begin the process. One step we missed was taking a photo copy of the ID listed on the form. Please take a moment and stop at our receptionist desk to have your ID photo copied or bring in a copy of your ID in! In our next issue, we will list possible opportunities you may be interested in getting involved. If you should have any other questions please feel free to contact, Monique Suarez, our administrative assistant, at 210.620.2459 or email her at .
