5 / Jean is fond of Jelly Ace candies. She went to the Gateway Mall’s candy store to buy some. She found that there are 15 flavors to choose from. So she decided to select only the flavors she wants. Here are the number of Jelly Ace candies Jean placed in her bag.
10 orange
5 apple
4 banana
6 grape
6 strawberry
Challenge Questions:
Open the URL site and answer the following questions:
\
  1. What is in a typical bag of
Jelly Ace candies she chose?
  1. What are the flavors and how
many?
  1. Are there the same number of
each flavor in her bag?
  1. Which flavor has the most?
  2. How many total Jelly Ace candies are in a typical bag?
* Prepare a formula on a 3 x 5
card and place it in the appropriate
cell in the spreadsheet.
* Make a computer spreadsheet
by transferring the data from
the floor spreadsheet.
* Compute the average for each
Jelly Ace flavor using the
spreadsheet formula.
* The students prepare a report
using the word processor, copying
ing the data and graph into the
report.
In the summary they must respond to the following questions.:
a. Which flavor(s) appear least?
b. Which flavor(s) appear most?
c. What is the ratio of apple,
orange, strawberry, banana
and grape flavors in an aver-
age bag?
d. If a bag of Jelly Ace contains
100 candies, how many apple
flavors are expected? How
many orange, strawberry,
banana and grape flavors?
* Click on the URL sites to explore the
short quiz.
Assignment (Group Work)
Access the group assignment using your LAN connection. Answer the following questions:
* Think about the different survey
questions below:
Who is your favorite basketball
player?
What is your favorite subject?
How many pets do you have?
How long did you study last night?
When is your birthday?
* Select one question from the survey questions listed above. Make at least two different types of graphs for your data. Write an explanation as top why you have chose n those / Motivates students to do the activity
Facilitate the Challenge Questionportion.
Treasure Hunt:
* Click on the hyperlink to view the URL sites on the “Treasure
Hunt.”
\
Follow-up students progress on the Treasure Hunt activities.
Reinforce the “Treasure Hunt” with actual activity as follows:
* Open a sample bag of Jelly Ace.
* Make a floor spreadsheet
* Place column and label each
from A to E.
* Place the group records of in-
formation in a particular row.
* Explain the difference between
labels and values in using the
spreadsheet.
Student Reflection:
* Ask the students how they would compute the average of each Jelly Ace flavor.
* Demonstrate the use of graphing tools to have the computer create a histogram of the average bag of Jelly Ace using the data in the spreadsheet.
* Follow-up the groups’ progress
using rubric
