IBCA Board of Directory Meeting Minutes

April 14, 2012

Ballard CC

Acting President Larry Carlson called the meeting to order at 10 AM. In attendance were the following directors: Larry Carlson, BJ Mayer, Brian Wheatley, Mark Wiley, Paul Rundquist, Mike Manderscheid, Darron Koolstra, Tom Betz, David Dowling, Dan Druivenga, Doug Newton, Jim Haag, Don Showalter, Bruce Eckenrod, Dan Kruse, Brad Bjorkgren, Paul Sonius,Dwight Gingerich, and Craig Douma.

After announcements and introductions, the agenda was accepted as is. The minutes of the August meeting were accepted as presented M/MS Newton and Mandersheid. All ayes.

Appointments were then discussed. Dan Kruse and Bruce Eckenrod were named as co-NW Iowa 1A Girls directors. M/MS Haag and Gingerich. All ayes. After discussion, it was agreed to keep a men’s and women’s college representative. M/MS Betz and Wheatley All ayes. Dennis Schafer of Grandview was approved as the new men’s representative. M/MS Showalter and Gingerich All ayes

Sec. Logan presented the financial report through April 1, 2012. Income was roughly $79 thousand with another 6 thousand expected. Expenses were at $49 thousand with another 25 thousand predicted. Report approved on m/ms Mayer and Wiley. All ayes

Jim Haag presented an oral report on the All Star games. The games were very competitive and operated smoothly. Dallas Center-Grimes was acknowledged as a great host. Report approved on m/ms Showalter and Dowling.

Sec. Logan presented a spread sheet on the Coaches vs cancer results as of March 1. Updated amounts collected as raised the total thus far to $279 thousand.

Sec Logan reported that the Federal Tax process has been filed .

Sec Logan then presented the membership breakdown for 2011-12. 326 of 372 schools joined, as well as 28 college programs, giving total membership of 2876 for this year.

Discussion was held on the possible recommendations and topics of discussion with the IHSAA and IGHAU. Sec Logan to forward requests to the IGHSAU. The IHSAA will host a meeting Tuesday April 17 to cover the boys’ requests and ideas. There was some information and discussion held as to the feasibility of District Basketball.

Sec Logan that presented the potential class division lists for both boys and girls for 2012-13. The girls changing to 5 classes creates a number of wrinkles in the present processes. After lengthy discussion, the following adjustments were voted upon.

Motion m/ms by Wheatley and Koolstra to leave boys directors as they are and the change girls directors to one director for 5A-4A, one director for 3A-2A, and one director for 1A. All ayes. M/MS Haag and Newton for the all region teams to have the following numbers : 5A-5 4A-6 3A-6 2A- 7 and 1A-7 and for the all sub-state teams to have 4A-6 3A-7 2A-8 1A-9. All ayes

After lengthy discussion of several IBCA processes and needs, m/ms by Betz and Wheatley to set dues at $75 per school next year and $40 for individual memberships. This membership fee includes all the rights and privileges of members for all listed on the membership form plus rights for everyone listed by email address to the Coaches Corner Library which will also be used for video newsletters, video updates and reminders, and board communications. All ayes.

Secretary Logan presented the Ballot for the 2012 Spring Elections. It will appear on the webpage for about one month before closing.

Chris Street Scholarship winners were then collected: NW- Nick List of MOC/FV, SE- Sarah Lenz of Highland of Riverside, SW - Christina Mens of Ballard NE- Nikki Brisette of Aplington-Parkersburg. Sec Logan to send certificate and $500 check to each head coach next week.

State Class Coach of the Year selections were then made. After discussion about each class, secret ballot voting named the following: Class 1A: Boys Bill Francis of Boyden-Hull Girls L.E. Moore of North Mahaska Class 2A: Boys Adolph Kochendorfer of St Edmonds Girls- Bill Harmsen of Western Christian Class 3A: Girls: laurie Donald of Benton Boys: Paul Rundquist of Mt. Pleasant Class 4A Girls- BJ Mayer of Iowa City West Boys- Steve Bergman of Iowa City West. The Maaske COY winners were also selected by secret ballot form a list presented and discussed. Men’s winner: Ross Douma of Dordt Women’s winner – Chris Yaw of Northwestern College.

The Fall Clinic was then discussed. Names were listed and teams selected for invitations. Lunch and general format to be like last year. Developmental clinic to be held, as well as a rules meeting. Favors to be whistles. Asst Sec Showalter to be largely in charge of obtaining speakers. M/MS by Haag and Dowling to keep the clinic as members only with fees set at $75 per person in advance with a $600 cap for any one school ( not district). Late/at the door registration is $90. Registration for just the developmental league is $35.

Sec Logan presented the by-laws and job descriptions and asked that we review these in depth at the fall meeting for revision and reconstruction. Sec Logan recommended we develop a new position that would be an assistant to the area directors .

M/MS by Sonius and Betz for the IBCA to cover two nights maximum of rooming costs for any Board member who would like to attend the national convention of the NHSBCA in the Wisconsin Dells this July 13-15. All ayes Those wanting to attend need to contact Sec Logan by June 1 to reserve rooms.

M/MS by Betz and Druivenga to have fall Board meeting August 18th with a 10 Am start at the Ballard CC. All ayes
